  1. 6 Ways to Prevent and Minimize Tooth Staining

  2. White Teeth • Our teeth are not naturally white. And as we age, their color can darken further. When the surface layer of the teeth called enamel erodes, the darker layer beneath it called dentin becomes more exposed. This causes the teeth to appear darker. • Another cause of tooth staining are plaque and tartar buildup. But if you're like several others who desire a bright smile and would like to prevent tooth discoloration, there are many ways you can do so.

  3. Here we talk about simple habits you can practice to protect your teeth from stains.

  4. Use a Drinking Straw • It's hard to avoid foods and drinks that may leave behind stains on our teeth. Fruit juices, coffee, tea, and carbonated drinks may all cause tooth staining. • If possible, use a straw to prevent direct contact of the liquid to your teeth. This is also recommended when consuming acidic drinks that can cause the tooth enamel to break down.

  5. Chew on Natural Tooth Cleansers • Munch on healthy foods that are known to help clean after our teeth. Apples and carrots make for great alternative to usual snacks. • Crunchy vegetables and fruits, along with those that have high water content, can help remove food debris left behind after eating. Since you're not able to brush immediately, you may want to finish off your meals with these types of food.

  6. Drink Water more Often • Don't forget to rinse your mouth often and to drink more water. Not everyone is a fan of water but this is the healthiest drink for our teeth. It will not leave behind stains. • Plus, it helps keep the saliva in our mouth flowing. Saliva does a critical job as it helps remineralize teeth. After or when having drinks or food that can stain our teeth, make it a habit to drink water.

  7. Brush Regularly • Don't let food debris and colored beverages sit on your teeth for too long. After about 30 minutes to an hour after meals, you can now brush your teeth. Ask your dentist for a whitening toothpaste that they can recommend. • And remember to brush gently, all while making sure you're covering all tooth areas, especially the crevices and back spots. Brushing too hard and using brush with hard bristles can also cause the tooth enamel to erode.

  8. Follow-up with a Floss • Since our toothbrush can't get into narrow spaces between teeth, it pays to floss regularly too. Flossing also helps get rid of plaque, another reason our tooth appears darker. • And when you floss and brush, not only will you minimize staining, you can also help prevent bad breath caused by food debris that are left unremoved.

  9. Keep up with your Dental Hygiene Visits • Don’t miss your dental hygiene visits. While regular brushing and flossing offer a huge help in keeping our teeth and mouth clean, nothing beats getting an oral cleanup. • Your dental hygienist and your dentist can also check for potential issues that can harm your smile. Every visit to the dental office also gives you the opportunity to ask professionals about more ways on how you can whiten your teeth, the safe and effective way.
