  1. Dental Care Provided by Your Child’s Pediatric Dentist

  2. Normally, your child’s first tooth starts to grow at the age of 6 months and by the age of 2 ½ years old, all his/her primary teeth are all grown. These primary or deciduous teeth start to shed between the ages 6-7 years old and his/her permanent teeth will start to grow. It is recommended that you bring your child to the dentist for his/her first dental check-up within 6 months after the first tooth erupts or before the child reaches his/her first birthday. This is done to prevent future dental problems.

  3. Parents should know what type of dentist they should bring their children for their dental check-ups. Usually parents would choose between a family dentist and a pediatric dentist. Between the two, it is recommended that you bring your child to a pediatric dentist. Pediatric dentists have the special training in providing preventive and therapeutic dental care to children from infancy to teenage years. They also have the proper training in taking care of the dental needs of children with special health needs.

  4. A pediatric dentist provides extensive dental care to children although out their developmental years. During infancy, he/she examines the teeth for presence of dental caries caused by nursing or bottle feeding and provides counseling to parents regarding the use of pacifiers and the child’s habit of thumb sucking. Between toddler age and school age, the pediatric dentist examines teeth for dental caries caused by eating sweet foods and poor oral hygiene. He/she also teaches and reiterates the

  5. importance of preventive oral care to children, which includes tooth brushing and nutritional counseling. During the child’s teenage years, the pediatric dentist provides early assessment for presence of malocclusion and proper referral to an orthodontist is made. He/she also provides emergency dental care to your child’s dental injuries caused by accidents in his/her childhood.

  6. Dental care is important in all stages of life; however, it is critical that you should take care of child’s dental health early in life. The health of his/her primary teeth will help determine the condition of his/her permanent teeth later in life. Your child’s pediatric dentist provides prevention, early detection and treatment of dental problems; and education on how to properly take care of his/her teeth.

  7. You should only entrust your child’s dental health to a qualified pediatric dentist. You should be able to find one in your area that will help with your child’s dental needs.http://theelgindentist.com
