  2. Mauryan Religion The MauryanEmpire was initially recognized Hinduism. Later on, Ashoka embraced Buddhism. Chandragupta embraced Jainism after retiring. The Mauryan people therefore are tolerant of differing religions.

  3. Seven Categories of Mauryan Society: • Philosophers • Farmers • Soldiers • Herdsmen • Artisans • Magistrates • Councilors These divisions were looked at as castes because like other societies, people were not allowed to change or marry outside of their professions.

  4. The Varna Brahmins (priest) Which category you are in is determined by the Varna. Kshatriyas (government) Vaishyas (farmers) Shudras (laborers) Outcasts/Untouchables

  5. Jobs and Activities Men: • Farming • Artistry • Being in the army • Herding • Women: • Archers • Royal body guards • Spies • Performers

  6. Mauryan Economy: • Established single currency across India • Disciplined central authority. Farmers freed of taxes and crop collection burdens from regional kings, paid taxes to nationally administered and strict-but-fair system of taxation by Arthashastra. • Public works and waterways to enhance productivity, while internal trade in India expanded due to newfound political unity and internal peace.

Trade & Economics: • Silk goods and textiles, spices and exotic foods were traded • Mainly with the Hellenistic & Greek • Used the Khyber Pass down modern day Pakistan and Afghanistan as major port – eventually utilized Silk Road • Private commercial entities • Specialized jobs -philosophers, farmers, soldiers, herdsmen, artisans and magistrates
