Joint degrees – Berlin 2003 “They (Ministers) note that initiatives have been taken by Higher Education Institutions in various European countries to pool their academic resources and cultural traditions in order to promote the development of integrated study programmes and joint degrees at first, second and third level. Moreover, they stress the necessity of ensuring a substantial period of study abroad in joint degree programmes as well as proper provision for linguistic diversity and language learning, so that students may achieve their full potential for European identity, citizenship and employability. Ministers agree to engage at the national level to remove legal obstacles to the establishment and recognition of such degrees and to actively support the development and adequate quality assurance of integrated curricula leading to joint degrees.”(Berlin Communiqué, 19. September 2003)
Joint degrees – Bergen 2005 “We (Ministers) note that 36 of the 45 participating countries have now ratified the Lisbon Recognition Convention. We urge those that have not already done so to ratify the Convention without delay. …………… We express support for the subsidiary texts to the Lisbon Recognition Convention and call upon all national authorities and other stakeholders to recognise joint degrees awarded in two or more countries in the EHEA.“ Stocktaking for 2007 „In particular, we (Ministers) shall look for progress in: ……….. the awarding and recognition of joint degrees, including at the doctorate level;” (Bergen Communiqué, 20 May 2005)

Definition - Standards • Related document to the LRC : „A joint degree should, for the purposes of this Recommendation, be understood as referring to a higher education qualification issued jointly by at least two or more higher education institutions or jointly by one or more higher education institutions and other awarding bodies, on the basis of a study programme developed and/or provided jointly by the higher education institutions, possibly also in cooperation with other institutions.“ • ERASMUS MUNDUS • Minimum three universities • Master's level
Related document to the LRC • A joint degree may be issued as: a. a joint diploma in addition to one or more national b. a joint diploma issued by the institutions offering the study programme in question without being accompanied by any national diploma c. one or more national diplomas issued officially as the only attestation of the joint qualification in question.

Czech Republic • Possibilities of a Czech HEIs 1. the study programme is accredited (as a programme realised jointly at the institutions of the consortium) - right to award HE diploma and HE degree (§46 The Act on HEIs) 2. the study programme is not accredited - the diploma will be considered as a foreign diploma - recognition according to §§ 89-90 of The Act on HEIs - recommended: abbreviation of the academic title • 3 Joint Master Degrees – Erasmus Mundus • Nisa University • www.neisse-uni.org/enversion/index.htm • Many others – mainly Master's and doctoral degrees
