  1. Costa Rica By: Brittney Braxdale Hour: 6 Date: 10/07/12

  2. Location • Surprisingly Costa Rica can be classified in the Northern AND Western Hemisphere. • Most people know its for its distinct location in Central America.

  3. Spanish Rule • Christopher Columbus made the first European landfall in the area. Settlement of Costa Rica began in 1522. For nearly 3 centuries, Spain administered the region as part of the Captaincy General of Guatemala under a military governor. The Spanish optimistically called the country "Rich Coast." Finding little gold or other valuable minerals in Costa Rica, however, the Spanish turned to agriculture.

  4. Independence • Independence from Central America from Spain was on September 15, 1821. • Their independence had a very small immediate effect.

  5. Would I visit this country? • Yes, I would definitely put Costa Rica on my top 10 places I would love to visit. I would love to visit there because their history has always interest me and because I’ve always wanted to try out their so called “to die for” food.

  6. Interesting Fact • One interesting fact that really shocked me was how in Costa Rica the sun rises and sets in almost the exact same spot every die. Unlike in Missouri where our sun rises and sets based on the season where in. This really amazed me.

  7. Fun facts • Because of the oldness of the country, Costa Rica has a very poor pluming system and ask people to many times wipe up their messes from the toilet with a paper towel and dispense it through the garbage. • In Costa Rica you don’t see many people blowing their nose in public. This can be frowned a pon for it is a sign of disrespect and rudeness.

  8. Flag • The colors of the Costa Rica Flag were borrowed from the French Tricolore. • The blue represents clear skies, the growth and development opportunities in Costa Rica, free and independent thinking, spirituality and perseverance. • White symbolizes joy and happiness, the power of wisdom, the initiative of the people, and peace. Red represents the warmth and hospitality of the people, the blood of their sacrifices, and the vibrancy of the land.
