Q.2 In a creative way show who each of the following are and the reasons why he believed he should be king. Tostig thought he should be king because he was jealous of his brother Harold Godwinson’s being king and he wanted the throne for himself.
William, believed he should be king of England. He claimed that Edward promised him the throne, after William helped him put down a rebellion of Harold Godwinesson. He also wanted to be king because being a King sounded much more powerful than being a Duke
Edgar the Atheling wanted to be king of England, because he was Edward’s nephew. But when Edward died, Edgar was only 14. The leading noblemen of England did not think he was suitable for such a big responsibility.

Harold Godwinesson was Edward’s brother-in-law. His armies had fought Edward’s in 1051 for control over England. He was crowned King 2 days after Edward died. He was one of the most powerful English nobleman.
Harold Godwinson was crowned king two days after Edward the confessor died but then in the battle of Hastings against William, Harold was shot in the eye with an arrow and died. So after moving to London, William was crowned king on the 25th of December 1066.
The Battle of Stamford Bridge was held at Stamford Bridge, on the 25th of September, 1066. It was Harold Godwinesson against Tostig and Harald Hadradar. Both Tostig and Harald were killed. The second battle was the Battle of Hastings. This time it was against Harold Godwinesson and William. They met on a field near Hastings on the 14th of October, 1066. Although the teams had the same amount of troops, William’s army were well-trained, whereas Harold’s were mostly farmers.
1066 was a very important year for England because a lot happened. Edward the confessor died and two days later Harold Godwinson was crowned king. Harald Hadradar and Tostig joined army forces and together fought Harold Godwinson and his army for the throne on Stamford bridge 25th of December . William Duke of Normandy also wanted the throne so after seeing Halley’s comet he gathered an army together and on the 14th of October he fought Harold Godwinson in a field near Hastings. During the battle Harold Godwinson was shot in the eye with an arrow and died. So after winning the battle William was crowned king on the 25th of December. He introduced the federal system changing the way people lived and it was also the end of the Viking rule in England.

Harold is Crowned The Tapestry shows the coronation of king Harold. We can see Harold Godwinson sitting in his throne being crowned. He surrounded by his nobles and Archbishop Stigand. On the right of the Archbishop there is people cheering. There are some Latin words, like Regis (you rule), Rex, (king), sidet (heavenly), Glorvm (glorify) and dedervn (disgraceful) you can see the archbishop Stigand, and there are nobles and people cheering. You can also see Halley’s comet: a sign for William. In the bottom right corner, you can see a fleet of ships. It is a sign that the Norman Invasion is coming. In the tapestry the Latin words seem to say: dedervn haroldo: Regis. Rex, Sidet: Glorvm. (Disgraceful Harold: you rule. King heavenly, glorify.) in the background there are some animals like a rooster and many more.
