How to Spot Scholarship Scams • Federal Trade Commission (FTC) • Project $cholar$cam • The scholarship is guaranteed or your money back • You can’t get this information anywhere else • I just need your credit card or bank account number to hold this scholarship • We’ll do all the work • The scholarship will cost money • You’ve been selected by a national foundation

  7. Scholarship Common Mistakes • Missing Deadlines • Un-met requirements • Incomplete application • Sloppy Application • Undersell potential and experience • Mis-spelled words and Poor Grammar

How to avoid common scholarship application mistakes ? • Use a scholarship organizer • Read the fine print • Plan to turn in the scholarship a couple of days before the deadline or post-mark date • If possible, type your application. • Have a second eye check your work Ie. College adviser, counselor, teacher, parent

  9. How to get an edge • Type your application • Turn your application in early • Be thorough and quantitative as possible. Which one sounds better? • I assisted some students with their homework. • I assisted 10 students with their homework. • For local and community scholarships, if not requested, send in a resume on resume paper.

Interview Tips • The interview starts as soon as you step foot onto the property of the interview site • Have resume’s on hand • Be knowledgeable about the scholarship you are applying to • Arrive at least 15 minutes before interview, never arrive too early, seem anxious • Carry a black portfolio, binder, or folder with paper and pen • Make sure breath is fresh and that no one catches you chewing gum.

Interview Tips • Perfume and cologne should be applied modestly • Keep your eye on the interviewer, don’t stare them down. • Appear to be engaged • Be nice to the receptionist • Don’t carry your cell phone to the interview area • If there are other interviewers with you in the interview holding room, try to avoid racy or offensive conversations. • I can’t and I don’t know phrases are foreign to you • Don’t jump into a question you don’t know, take a minute and collect your thoughts before responding. It’s better to wait then to say something foolish • Do not bash other interview candidates present or not

Interview Tips Cont’d • If at a reception, try to make your goal to meet all of the sponsors. • Avoid using slang and vernacular, pronounce your ing’s, avoid ain’t • Be careful of using yes maam and yes sir, know your audience. • Avoid political and religious discussions • Don’t come across as being arrogant or timid • Be confident even if you are in a uncomfortable environment • Have questions ready at the conclusion of the interview, nothing that be obtained through readily available sources • Don’t complain, whin, or talk ill about anything. Ie. Food, time, location, Jennings, former boss

  13. Cont’d • Hair should be neatly done • Finger nails should be clean • Invest in a watch • Avoid wearing clip on ties • If you do not have a suit, that’s fine, try wearing a solid cardigan or sweater with a tie(men), button-up(women). • Make sure your shoes are clean

Cont’d • Invest in a good interview outfit • Suit, blazer, cardigan, slacks, skirt, tie, closed-toe shoes, and stockings • Target • Be conservative in appearance • Preferred primary Colors: gray, navy, blk • Acceptable primary Colors: tan, brown • Try to avoid colors: pink, red, purple, green, yellow, orange, white (however these can be the color of your shirts and blouses)

Helpful Hints • After admission to college, check with departments to see if you qualify for any departmental scholarships as a freshmen. • Sometimes this information can be found on the departments website. If not, call the department to check. • Caution, some department scholarships may require you to fulfill a degree within that department.
