Though most rashes are harmless and disappear without the need for treatment, it is always good to take a trip to the doctor’s office for detail evaluation. In this post, experts from Montessori Chino, CA will share some of the common skin problems found in children. Ringworm: Ringworm is a very common skin problem that is not caused by any worm or does not need to be itchy. It is mainly caused by a fungus that lives in dead skin, hair, and nail tissue. It normally starts as a red, scaly patch or bumps found in children’s skin. Slowly gradually it takes the appearance of a red ring with raised, blistery or scaly borders. Ringworm is passed on by close contact with a person or an animal. Kids can get this skin problem by sharing things like towels or sports gear. The doctor may prescribe some antifungal ointment to treat this problem. Fifth Disease: According to Montessori Chino, CA teachers this skin problem is contagious and usually, e passes in a couple of weeks. The fifth disease starts with flu-like symptoms. You may observe a bright face (normally described as a ‘slapped cheek’ appearance) and some rashes on your child's body if he is suffering from this problem. It spreads by coughing and sneezing and is most contagious before the rash appears. Doctors may prescribe some pain relievers and suggest the patient take enough fluid and raised to treat this skin problem. Chickenpox: Earlier this was a very common skin problem among kids but thanks to the chickenpox vaccine that it is rarely seen in today’s kids. It is highly contagious and spreads easily. Chickenpox can be very serious, and children should get their chickenpox vaccine on time. The teachers suggest parents consult a doctor to treat chickenpox and its symptoms. Impetigo: Impetigo is normally caused by bacteria and creates red sores or blisters on children's bodies. These blisters can break open, ooze and develop a yellow-brown crust. Sores can be found all over the body but mostly around the mouth and nose. Impetigo can be spread by close contact with people having the same problem or by sharing things like a towel or toys. Kids may feel like scratching the blisters, but this can spread it to other parts of the body. Impetigo can be treated with antibiotic ointment or oral medicines. Heat rash (prickly heat): Heat rashes are very common in children and mostly happens during the summer season due to the hot weather and excessive sweating. These rashes look like small red or pink pimples and are usually seen on the forehead, neck, and shoulders of the babies. The teachers advise parents to dress children in light cotton wear during the summer season to avoid having these rashes. Some other common childhood skin problems are Warts, Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease, Eczema, Hives, Scarlet Fever and Rosella.
