  2. Homonyms • Homonyms are words that sound the same, and are spelled the same, but have different meanings. Example: Stalk 1. The corn stalk is tall. 2. Paparazzi stalk famous people. Homo = same Nym = name

  3. Ambiguity A word, a phrase, or a sentence is ambiguous when it has more than one sense that are not synonyms of each other. A sentence is ambiguous if it has two or more paraphrase which are not themselves paraphrases of each other.

  4. Two kinds of ambiguity • Lexical ambiguity • Any ambiguity resulting from the ambiguity of a word • Example : trunk is synonymous with elephant’s noseand with chest but the two are not synonyms • Grammatical / structural ambiguity • Any ambiguity resulting from the relationship of a word to each other in different ways, even though none of the individual words are ambiguous • Example : Flying plane can be dangerous

  5. Practice… • Find a lyric of any English song and find the example of homonym and ambiguity in it. Explain why it is called as homonym and ambiguous ! Good Luck !
