  3. Try, Guess and Check Problem Solving: Method for when the numbers are low and easy to tally: 1) Tally circle method The Red Sox beat the Cubs by 9 runs in a baseball game Saturday. There were 19 runs scored in the game. What was the final score of the game? Use the tally method to figure this our. Draw 2 circles – one for each team. 1st tally the 9 runs at the top of one circle for the number of runs that the team won by.

  4. Then start counting at the 10 and put a tally in a circle and tally # 11 in the other circle and continue back and forth until you reach the total number of runs scored in the game. (19) Now total the tallies in the circles and you will have the score of the game. Score: 14 to 5. Red Sox had 14 runs

  5. Method for when numbers are too high to tally: 2) Guess and Check Chart The Hawks beat the Jays in a baseball game. The scores were 6 runs apart and there were 48 runs scored in the game. How many runs did each team score? Make a Guess and Check Chart. Put the losing team in the first column. In the second column, you add 6 to the original guess because the team won by 6 runs. Make a guess at the Jays’ scores and complete the chart until you get the sum of the scores correct.

  6. Jays Hawks (Jays +6) Sum of both scores= 48 guess right? 26 20 + 26 = 46 20 Guess too low 31 25 + 31 = 56 25 Guess too high 21 27 21 + 27 = 48 Right! When you get the correct answer you will know the scores. Jays 21 and Hawks 27
