  1. Basketball • Assist: The last pass to a teammate that leads to a point (basket). • Bank Shot: A shot where the ball is hit of the backboard before it goes into the basket. • Blocked shot: the successful deflection of a shot by touching part of the ball on its way to the basket. • Box out: A player’s attempt to position his body between his opponents and the basket to get rebounds and prevent the opponents from doing so. • Dunk: A player close to the basket jumps and strongly throws the ball down into it. • Fast Break: run-and-shoot offense. It begins with a defensive rebound. These teammates sprint to their basket and quickly shoot before enough opponents catch up to stop them. • Field Goal: Basket—worth 2 points, or 3 points. • Foul Shot/free throw: Unguarded shot taken from the foul line, because of a personal or technical foul—worth 1 point. • Full-court press: when defenders start guarding the offense in the backcourt. • Jump ball: 2 opposing players have possession of the ball at the same time. • Layup: a short shot taken after driving to the basket by leaping up under the basket and using one hand to drop the ball directly into the basket (layin) or bank the ball off the backboard.

More Terms • Loose ball: a ball that is not in possession of either team. • Pivot: the foot that must remain touching the floor, until the ball handler who has stopped dribbling or is ready to pass or shoot. • Rebound: A player grabs a ball that is coming off the rim or backboard after a shot attempt. • Screen/Screener: The offensive player stands between a teammate and/or a defender to give his team a chance to take an open shot • 3-Point shot: field goal worth 3 points because the shooter had both feet on the floor behind the 3-point line. • Tipoff: the initial jump ball that starts the game. • Traveling: a violation when the ball handler takes too many steps without dribbling. • Turnover: when the offense loses possession through it own fault by passing the ball out of bound or committing a floor violation. • Floor violation: a player’s action that violates the rules –traveling/,double dribble, back court, out of bounds. • Screen: standing in front of a defensive player to allow an offensive player to get around the defense. • Full Court Press: Defense on the offense right after a shot has been made.

  3. Violations • 1. Double Dribble-Dribbling again after you have stopped dribbling, or dribbling with both hands at the same time. • 2. Key Hole –The offensive team being in the key-hole for more than three seconds without taking a shot. • 3. Back Court-Ball is brought across the center line and the offensive team crosses back over the center line during the same possession. • Others—Already talked about—traveling, loose ball,

  4. Fouls • 1. Technical-Unsportsmanlike conduct, swearing, showing disrespect to officials. • 2. Personal (Defensive)-A normal foul • 3. Double-Two opposing players foul each other at the same time. • 4. Offensive-Players with the ball makes body contact such as pushing, charging, blocking tripping when their team has the ball. • 5. Flagrant-A foul with intent of causing harm to the player.

  5. Other Information • A technique to check the air pressure in a ball—hold the ball above your head, drop it—if it bounces to your armpits or chest, it has enough air. • Time is stopped every time the officials whistle blows. • Basket Rim is 10’ off the ground
