  3. Introduction

  4. What is cancer? • A Collection of Related Diseases • Abnormal cell cycle • Malignant cancerous tumors

  5. Risk Factors for Cancer 1.Age 2.Alcohol 3.Cancer-Causing Substances 4.Chronic Inflammation 5.Diet 6.Hormones 7.Immunosuppression 8.Infectious Agents 9.Obesity 10.Radiation 11.Sunlight 12.Tobacco

  6. Prevention • The goal of primary prevention is to keep cancer from developing. • The goal of secondary cancer prevention is to detect and treat precancerous conditions ex: screening test , genetic test

  7. Early method

  8. Cellular pathology

  9. Modern method ~Screening test

  10. Example

  11. Drawback

  12. Modern method ~Genetic test

  13. What is genetic test? • the process of using medical tests to look for changes (mutations) in a person’s genes or chromosomes. • Predictive gene testing: look for gene mutations that might put a person at risk of getting a disease.

  14. the benefits of genetic test • the chance for a better understanding of your risk for a certain disease • finding disease earlier, when treatment is more likely to be helpful.

  15. the drawbacks of genetic test • do not give precise answers about diseases. • A positive test result does not always mean you will get the disease, so the test may create anxiety

  16. Example of genetic test • About three to five percent of colorectal cancers)are believed to be caused by mutations in the MLH1, MSH2, MSH6 , PMS2 or EPCAM genes. • When someone carries a mutation in any of these genes ,are at higher risk of developing cancer. • We can have genetic test that see if someone have these mutations to estimate the risk of having colorectal cancer.

  17. Extensive reading Angelina Jolie’s decision

  18. inherited breast cancer • a faulty copy of the BRCA1 gene • She had ovaries removed • Angelina Jolie Effect

  19. Conclusion • Cancer • We must know how it happened and thus know how to prevent it • Examination • Early method • Modern method • “We hope we can save lives we don’t know as well.”──Otis Brawley
