  5. Parent’s Homework • Please help your child to remember to show you their take home folder each day. • Take out all papers and onlyreturn notes and signed documents.

  6. Homework • All students are expected to read 20 minutes each night. Reading may be done independently, aloud to an adult, or a shared reading with an adult. • Students are also expected to study their basic addition and subtraction facts (0-10) for 10 minutes each night. You can find resources for practicing basic facts on the First Grade page from the Wyngate website. • Also, students are expected to practice ½ to full page of handwriting each night (approx. 5 minutes). We are providing a handwriting packet that illustrates proper form of each letter. The packet will change after the first semester to include practicing writing words and numbers.

  7. Reading • A Reading Initiative Teacher will teach reading to some students • Mixed abilities in each class • Reading groups based on word recognition, comprehension

  8. I PICK a Good Fit Book • I choose a book. • Purpose: Why do I want to read it? • Interest: Does it interest me? • Comprehend: Am I understanding what I am reading? • Know: I know most of the words

  9. 3 Ways to Read a Book • Read the words I Knew You Could • Read the pictures • Retell = Use pictures and words to remember and tell what you read at an earlier time.

  10. Reading: Decoding (Sounding Out) • Does it look right? • Does it sound right? • Does it make sense?

  11. Comprehension = Understanding • 3 Types of Questions: • Literal – Right there in the book • Inferential – Requires background knowledge combined with an understanding of the text • Interpretive – Multiple Perspectives • Ask questions to check understanding!

  15. Handwriting • Included in the Packet are points of reference for handwriting techniques. • Go from top to bottom, continuous stroke • Handwriting Packets will be distributed starting next week for daily homework practice.

  16. Word Study • Words Their Way- exploration of word patterns • Will be a combination of word wall words and word patterns (such as VCV, chunks, etc). • Starting later in the year with more information to come

  17. Writing Process • Prewriting = Brainstorming • Drafting = Getting Ideas Down on Paper • Revising = Making our writing more interesting • Editing = Looking for spelling, punctuation, and capitalization errors. • Publishing = Making your work shine!

  24. Birthdays! • We have a student who is allergic to all seeds (including Sesame, Sunflower, mustard and Flax seed), as well as all beans and all peas. Please do NOT buy the "school safe" brand by Treasure Mills. This brand can contain pea flour which this student is allergic to. Mrs. Martin is allergic to all nuts (peanuts and tree nuts). Be especially mindful to read the disclosures that start with “made/processed in a facility that shares equipment with…” • Celebrated in the cafeteria. You can either bring them at 11:55 or drop them off in the morning.
