Different Alloys of Marine Grade Aluminum Sheets Abstract: The main alloys of marine grade aluminum sheets are 5052, 5083, 5086, 5059,6061, etc. What are their properties and applications? For example, 5083 aluminum is a right choice for sea water while 5052 is more suitable for fresh water boat building. Haomei Aluminum offers all them with certification. Welcome to read this page. Marine Grade Aluminum 5083 Aluminum alloy has been used in shipbuilding industry for nearly a hundred years. With the rapid development of shipbuilding industry at home and abroad, the lightweight of ships has been paid more and more attention. Due to the low density, high strength, high rigidity and corrosion resistance of aluminum, the ships made of aluminum are 15-20% lighter than ships built with steel or other synthetic materials.
There are many kinds of aluminum sheets used for ship manufacturing, such as 5086, 5454, 5083, 5052, 5383, 5059,etc., for making fishing ships, yachts, small boats, etc. Due to the different using environment, the performance requirements for aluminum sheets are also different in the manufacturing process. The advantages of 5083 aluminum alloy used in the marine field lie in its high strength, corrosion resistance, plasticity and excellent welding performance. In the 1960s, since the production cost of aluminum plate, aluminum strip, etc. was gradually reduced, and it was widely used as a lightweight material. It was used to make yacht shells, hull superstructures, masts, and port infrastructure. In the chemical composition of aluminum-magnesium alloys used in marine engineering, the maximum magnesium content of 5052 alloy with low magnesium content is only 2.8%, and the content of 5083 alloy with the highest magnesium content is 4.9%. Although the strength properties of the alloy increase due to the increase of Mg content, the plasticity and corrosion resistance decrease significantly, especially for alloys with Mg>6%. 5083 aluminum sheet cannot be heat treated to strengthen, and their main strengthening method is work hardening. The processing technology is generally to undergo hot rolling, cold rolling and other processes after smelting to form a sheet, and then stabilize it to achieve the H116 state to meet the corrosion resistance of the alloy.
Marine Grade Aluminum 5052 Marine grade aluminum sheets have the advantages of light weight, good corrosion resistance, good processing and forming performance, and non-magnetic properties. Marine grade aluminum 5052 is widely used in passenger ships and small boats, which can reduce the weight, improve the corrosion resistance and increase the operating speed. The 5052 aluminum sheet belongs to 5000 aluminum alloys and the main alloying elements are magnesium and silicon. The product has medium strength, good corrosion resistance, weldability, and good anodizing effect. Therefore, 5052 aluminum has become a commonly used marine grade aluminum plate in the shipbuilding industry. In terms of the production process, the 5052 alloy is processed from semi-continuous ingot casting, homogenization, sawing, surface milling, heating, hot rolling, annealing,
cold rolling, annealing, cold rolling, solution treatment, aging treatment, to shearing, leveling, inspection, and oiling and packaging. The quality of 5052 aluminum plate has three key indicators. First, the structure is small and the performance is uniform. Especially for ultra-thick plates, the performance in the thickness direction is required to be uniform, and there should be no large performance fluctuations. For medium-thick plates and thin plates, there should be no large performance fluctuations in length and width. The second is high dimensional accuracy. It mainly includes accurate thickness and accurate width, especially the most difficult and strict thickness accuracy, which will directly affect the performance and subsequent processing. The last is to have good aluminum sheet shape. Plate shape includes flatness and plate convexity. Because the two have a great influence on subsequent processing and are irreversible. The commonly used tempers are 5052 t6, t651, 5052 h32 and 5052 h34 aluminum. In general, the internal stress of T6 will be relatively large, and the processing will be deformed. Therefore, the most suitable state for processing is T651. The T651 state is stretched on the basis of T6 to eliminate internal stress. It is a high-quality aluminum alloy
product that has undergone heat treatment and pre-stretching. Haomei 5052 aluminum sheet has been certified by China Classification Society (CCS), Det Norske Veritas (DNV), American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Bureau Veritas (BV) and British Company (LR). In addition to marine aluminum sheets, we also supply marine aluminum extrusion and welding wire to enable you finish one-stop shopping. Marine Grade Aluminum AA 5086 In the development of the international marine economy, the performance and international certification of marine aluminum sheets are one of the important factors restricting the development of domestic aluminum enterprises. It is precisely under such strict requirements that Haomei Aluminum has been placing large orders for marine aluminum sheets recently. In February, it gets an order from Türkiye customers for 63 tons of AA 5086 marine aluminum sheets. Marine aluminum alloys have the advantages of light weight, good corrosion resistance, good processing and forming performance, and non-magnetic properties. At the same time, it has a certain yield ratio, high temperature strength, fatigue strength and elongation. The high-temperature strength should ensure that the mechanical properties should remain unchanged when heated to 100 degrees Celsius, and the yield limit should not be
reduced by more than 40% when heated to 250 degrees Celsius. Because marine aluminum sheets have been widely used in small and medium-sized passenger ships, yachts, speedboats, high-speed missile boats, patrol boats, destroyers. At present, three alloys of 5083, 5086 and 5383 are mainly used in the hull structure, and their corrosion resistance, mechanical properties and welding performance are all good. These small boats have a weak point that is easy to break, but using aluminium alloy can well avoid such problems. Marine grade aluminum 5086 properties Generally speaking, the tempers of 5086 aluminum sheet is O, H111, H112, H116, H321, etc. In terms of mechanical properties, the 5086 aluminum plate’s tensile strength (MPa): ≥240, conditional yield strength (MPa): ≥95, elongation 10(%): ≥10 and elongation δ5(%): ≥12. Hoamei Aluminum makes uses of the residual heat of "1+4" hot rolling coils to realize self annealing, which develops a "1+4" hot rolling short-process high-efficiency production
technology for the production of 5xxx marine grade aluminum sheets, eliminating recrystallization annealing, cold rolling, intermediate annealing, cleaning, stabilizing annealing and other processes after hot continuous rolling. That will shorten the production cycle by 3-7 days and the production cost is reduced by 50-140 dollars/ton. The 5086 aluminum plate’s mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, plate shape, surface quality and other quality indicators can meet the requirements of Det Norske Veritas (DNV.GL), American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), China Classification Society (CCS) and RINA. Marine Grade Aluminum Sheet 5059 Compared with common aluminum alloys, the marine grade aluminum has better corrosion resistance. Al-Mg alloy is the most widely used marine grade aluminum, which has lower density than common aluminum, excellent resistance to marine climate and seawater corrosion, weldability and polishability, and excellent plasticity (Mg≤5% ), as well as good seismic performance, and higher fatigue strength than tat of duralumin. In the chemical composition of aluminum-magnesium alloys used in marine engineering, the maximum magnesium content of 5052 alloy with low magnesium content is only 2.8%, and the content of 5083 alloy with the highest magnesium content is 4.9%. Although the strength of aluminum alloy increase due to the increase of Mg content, the plasticity and
corrosion resistance decrease significantly, especially for alloys with Mg>6%. Deformed aluminum alloys used in marine engineering include 5052 (5A02), 5252, 5154, 5454, 5754, 5083, 5086, 5059,etc. Among them, the magnesium content of the 5052 alloy is the lowest, the second group is 5154, 5454 and 5754 alloys, the magnesium content of the 5083 alloy is moderately high, 5059 aluminum has the highest magnesium content. 5059 aluminum plate is a 5xxx Al-Mg aluminum alloy with good corrosion resistance and tensile strength. It has excellent overall performance and is currently recognized as the most technically difficult high-end marine aluminum alloy, which is widely used in ships, oil tankers and other fields. A new generation of marine engineering deformed aluminum alloy 5059 was developed in 1999 by Crus Aluminum Company (now Aleris Aluminum Company) and registered with the American Aluminum Association (AA). It is an excellent marine engineering aluminum alloy. The alloy has been used in the manufacture of cruise ships and various ships that can carry 7,000 passengers, as well as LNG ship. Compared with the traditional 5083 alloy, the impurity Si, Fe, and Mn contents of 5059 aluminum are slightly higher, and the average content of Mg is 24% higher than that of the
5083 alloy. Zn is an impurity in 5083 alloy, but it is a trace alloying element in 5059 alloy, and 5059 alloy also contains 0.05% Zr~0.25% Zr. Due to these differences in composition, the properties of alloy 5059 are overall better than those of alloy 5083, but but due to its high magnesium content, its press working and forming properties are slightly inferior. Marine Aluminum Diamond Plate Marine grade aluminum diamond plate is an aluminum plate with a pattern on the surface, which has long been used in large, medium and small passenger ships, cruise ships, motorboats, high-speed missile boats, patrol boats, destroyers, fishing boat, etc. It has good anti-skid effect, strong anti-rust ability and light weight. The advantages of 5083 aluminum sheet used in the marine field lie in its high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, plasticity and excellent welding performance. In the 1960s, with the advancement of technology, the production cost of aluminum sheet was gradually reduced and it was widely used as a lightweight material. It was used to make yacht shells, hull superstructures, masts, and port infrastructure. 5083 aluminum diamond plate is a representative product of aluminum tread plates. It features high hardness, strong corrosion resistance and good rust prevention effect, of which the hardness has obvious advantages in similar products. It can be well adapted to the occasions of high strength and high corrosion resistance, and has a good application effect on ships, vehicles and working platforms.
Magnesium element is added to this series during processing. The magnesium alloy content of 5083 aluminum plate is as high as 4.5%. At the same time, the hardness of 5083 aluminum plate is higher than that of 5754 aluminum plate. Of course, 5083 aluminum plate price is relatively high. At present, the commonly used 5083 aluminium diamond plate is 5 bar aluminum tread plate. Since the pattern on the surface of the aluminum plate is arranged in relatively parallel according to five concave and convex patterns, and each pattern presents an angle of 60-80 degrees with other patterns, so this pattern has excellent anti-slip performance. Marine Aluminum 6061 Marine aluminum 6000 series are mainly used to produce extruded profiles, and its representative alloys are alu 6061( mainly used in he United States and Canada) and AA6082 alloy (mainly used in European countries). AA6082 alloy is a general light structural material in Europe, widely used in transportation tools and general industries. 6082 aluminum profile needs to undergo double-base heat treatment for aging hardening. The processing steps are: billet heating→ extrusion→ direct water quenching of profiles→ solution treatment→ straightening→ furnace aging. Only by strictly controlling the process parameters of each process can satisfactory mechanical properties be obtained.
6061 aluminum rod is a commonly used product in aluminum rod materials. Its hardness is around 95HB, which is suitable for general mechanical parts. The price of 6061 aluminum rod is also very competitive. Haomei 6161 aluminum rod is with compact internal structure and no pores and bubbles. 6061 aluminum rod has excellent processing performance, excellent welding characteristics and electroplating properties, good corrosion resistance, high toughness and no deformation after processing, good anodizing effect. The international grade of 6061 aluminum is Alsimg0.8. It main alloying element is Al, Si(silicon alloy reaches 1%) and Mg (magnesium alloy reaches 0.8%). This alloy has certain corrosion resistance and rust resistance. Due to the silicon alloy, the 6061 aluminum rod also has a certain wear resistance, and the hardness is in the middle, which can meet the hardness requirements in the conventional industry. It can be said that it is more commonly used in mold manufacturing. The application of marine grade aluminum sheet and profile has become more and more mature, especially for the weight reduction of the hull structure, the improvement of shipping speed, and the reduction of energy consumption.
