Project Reminders… • You should be working on your parts of the essay and the final product this week and next for homework. • You are turning in only ONE essay. • Label which part of the essay you create. • The research logs ARE our “works cited” – you don’t need a separate page • You should have checked with me about your “thesis statement” at this point. • All work is due Monday 3/31 • Tuesday is the last in class work day in lab 209
WWI Weapons Technology DBQs The questions at the top of your handout are your DBQs Discuss the primary sources in your small groups with your partners and answer the questions as thoroughly as possible.
Block Opener: Give two examples of how propaganda affected nations involved in WWI. Describe how new technology determined the way WWI was fought. 3. Based on what you know about the term “front”, how do you think life changed on the “home front” for families who were left behind?
The Fronts of WWI You need your FRONT map and 4 colored pens or pencils
The Western Front Draw the western Front (Orange Line) on your map and label it Western Front Label Ypres, Somme, Marne and Verdun
Now, on the back of your FRONT map… Verdun – February, 1916 German offensive.
The Somme: July-Nov. 1916 • One of the costliest battles of the war • Over a million people killed due to new military technology • Many believe it was the turning point of the war because the Allies (French and British) won.
Continue on the back of your sheet: Write “Western Front” Now describe what you know about the western front and what it was like. (a couple sentences)

Battle of Tannenberg Classic example of a communication breakdown Germans intercepted un-coded Russian messages Two Russian Commanders failed to find out what the other was doing Germans replaced passive commanders with aggressive ones in the middle of the fight Russians were completely outwitted and lost everything 92,000 Russian troops were captured in the action; an estimated 78,000 were killed or wounded, only around 10,000 escaped. The Germans suffered about 12,000 casualties and, in addition to prisoners captured over 500 guns. Sixty trains were required to transport captured equipment to Germany.

Gallipoli Front In a different color, circle the Gallipoli Front on your map and label it Gallipoli Front Gallipoli
Gallipoli Training occurred in the Egyptian dessert, surrounded by sand and helpful Egyptian allies and resources in easy reach. Actual Fighting was in mountainous country and dry scrub with the Turks sinking every supply ship that made an attempt to get supplies to the English
Turks had excellent gun positions in the high cliffs English plan was to make the Turks run out of ammunition by sending unarmed Australians against their guns. Untrained for mountainous fighting and led by idiot commanders, wave after wave of Australians died, but the Turks held firm. Eventually the English gave up and retreated. More men died during the retreat, than the battling The Gallipoli Disaster, 1915

Arabian Front On your map, in a new color, draw an arrow pointing to Saudi Arabia and label it Arabian Front
T. E. Lawrence & the “Arab Revolt”, 1916-18 This man is an English nobleman who prefers the Bedouin way of life. Still, he helps his country by convincing the Bedouin tribes to help the English against the Turks.
The Arab Revolt Laurence of Arabia and two Arabian princes led the Arab horsemen to make hit and run raids on Turkish supply lines, the main Arabian railroad and several forts. They successfully hampered the enemy.
T. E. Lawrence & Prince Faisal at Versailles, 1918-19 Promised independence and support for their help in the war, the Arabians gain nothing from the British who immediately forget their promises.

The Somme: DBQs • Look at only Documents B and C. • Note: • British soldier memoir has much different tone than the newspaper and describes a very different outcome • Memoirs of British and German soldier more or less line up in saying British suffer massive casualties from concentrated German machine gun fire that British artillery could not displace • These are firsthand accounts but they are memoirs written after so does that effect the reliability? • Why are documents B and C so different from Document A? • Which document do students find the most trust-worthy?

Armenian Genocide • From 1915 to shortly after WWI Christian Armenians were attacked by the Ottoman Empire and systematically killed. • At this time the Ottoman Empire controlled the Armenian region. • Turkey (former Ottoman Empire) still denies this was “genocide”.
Armenian Genocide Armenians were marched from their homeland into the Syrian desert, starved, raped and tortured. • While viewing the video, APPARTS the 10 minute film. • You may check in with your table partners AFTER the film has finished.
Post Questions: • Define Genocide • List three motivations or reasons for genocide • Why do you think it was significant that genocide first happened in WWI?
