EYE CONTACTS ‘Face is the index of the mind and eyes are the windows to one’s soul’, captures the essence of their relevance. Eyes are one of the best attributes of human expression because they can be direct and elusive, as well as show a million different emotions in just one look. Even one glance can tell you a lot about a person’s character, especially if a smile or smirk is thrown in.
Facial expressions “The expressions we see in the faces of others engage a number of different cognitive processes. Emotional expressions elicit rapid responses, which often imitate the emotion in the observed face.” Chris Frith
GESTURES The importance of gesture development in infants and children has been long underestimated. Gestures are defined by Iverson and Thal (1998) as “actions produced with the intent to communicate and are typically expressed using fingers, hands, and arms, but can also include facial features (e.g. lip smacking for “eating”) and body motions (e.g. bouncing for “horsie”).“ Kelli Ellenbaum, MS CCC-SLP
POSTURES • Your Posture is important and conveys a message. • Good, straight Posture indicates leadership and confidence. • It tells the audience that you are in control. It conveys the message that you have confidence in your competence. • Leaning slightly forward shows the audience you care. • Slouching to one side delivers the opposite message. It shows disinterest. • Hunched shoulders indicate lack of confidence and possibly low self-esteem.
TONE OF VOICE When customers hear your voice on the other end of the line, they imagine the person behind the voice. If they like what they hear in the voice, chances are they will perceive you as knowledgeable and confident. If they don’t like your voice, it makes them want to disconnect or speak to a supervisor. Your voice is your best vehicle for making the customer trust you. Judith Filek — President, Impact Communications, Inc
Summing up… To sum up it may be said that that Interpersonal communication is much more than the explicit meaning of words, the information or message conveyed. It also includes implicit messages, whether intentional or not, which are expressed through non-verbal behaviours.Non-verbal communications include facial expressions, the tone and pitch of the voice, gestures displayed through body language etc. These non-verbal signals can give clues and additional information and meaning over and above spoken (verbal) communication.
