The human circulatory system consists of the heart, blood vessels, and the blood.
The circulatory system works like a highway in a city. Your blood delivers nutrients and oxygen to the tissues in your body just like the highways are used to deliver goods in a city.
Arteries – deliver oxygenated blood AWAY from the heart. Veins – deliver “used” (deoxygenated) blood to the heart so that it can pick up oxygen. Blood appears red when it has oxygen in it. Blood appears blue when it does not contain oxygen.
Cardiac – having to do with the heart Pulmonary - having to do with the lungs
2 Types of Circulation: Systemic – the blood flows through the whole body Pulmonary - blood flows through the heart and the lungs
Your heart consists mostly of muscle called cardiac muscle. It is a large pump that sends the blood through your body
_____________ – the largest artery in the body. It delivers blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
Aorta – the largest artery in the body. It delivers blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Aorta
___________________________ – brings deoxygenated blood from the top of the body to the heart (needs oxygen). Aorta Aorta
Superior vena cava – brings deoxygenated blood from the top of the body to the heart (needs oxygen). Aorta Aorta Superior Vena Cava
________________________________ – brings deoxygenated blood from the lower part of the body to the heart Aorta Aorta Superior Vena Cava
Inferior vena cava – brings deoxygenated blood from the lower part of the body to the heart Aorta Aorta Superior Vena Cava Inferior Vena Cava
______________________ – Takes deoxygenated blood from the heart and gives it to the lungs where it collects oxygen Aorta Superior Vena Cava Inferior Vena Cava
Pulmonary artery – Takes deoxygenated blood from the heart and gives it to the lungs where it collects oxygen Aorta Pulmonary Artery Superior Vena Cava Pulmonary Artery Inferior Vena Cava
________________________________ – move oxygenated blood from the lungs into the left ventricle of the heart Aorta Pulmonary Artery Superior Vena Cava Pulmonary Artery Inferior Vena Cava
Pulmonary vein – move oxygenated blood from the lungs into the left ventricle of the heart Aorta Pulmonary Artery Superior Vena Cava Pulmonary Artery Pulmonary Veins Pulmonary Veins Inferior Vena Cava

Atria – chambers where the blood enters the heart Aorta Pulmonary Artery Superior Vena Cava Pulmonary Artery Pulmonary Veins Pulmonary Veins Right Atrium Inferior Vena Cava

Ventricles – the lower chambers that pump blood out of the heart Aorta Pulmonary Artery Superior Vena Cava Pulmonary Artery Pulmonary Veins Pulmonary Veins Left Atrium Right Atrium Right Ventricle Inferior Vena Cava

_____ – a “flap” that keeps blood from flowing backwards Aorta Pulmonary Artery Superior Vena Cava Pulmonary Artery Pulmonary Veins Pulmonary Veins Left Atrium Right Atrium Right Ventricle Left Ventricle Inferior Vena Cava
Valve – a “flap” that keeps blood from flowing backwards Aorta Pulmonary Artery Superior Vena Cava Pulmonary Artery Pulmonary Veins Pulmonary Veins Left Atrium Right Atrium Bicuspid/Mitral Valve Tricuspid Valve Aortic Valve Right Ventricle Left Ventricle Inferior Vena Cava

There are 3 types of blood vessels: Veins – take deoxygenated blood to the heart Arteries – move oxygenated blood from the heart to the body. Capillaries – the smallest blood vessels.
Capillaries – the smallest blood vessels. They bring oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and absorb carbon dioxide and waste so that the body can get rid of these bad things. CO2 O2 waste nutrients waste nutrients CO2 O2
When the heart contracts, it pushes a wave fluid (blood) through the arteries. The force of the blood on the walls of the arteries is called blood pressure.
Normal blood pressure is 120/80 Systolic pressure – the force felt in the arteries when the ventricles contract (top number) Diastolic pressure – the force felt when the ventricles relax (bottom number)
BLOOD FACTS * In one drop of blood, there is 5 million red blood cells, 8,000 white blood cells, and 250, 000 platelets. * * In an adult’s body, there are 10.6 pints of blood circulating around. * White Blood Cell Red Blood Cell Platelet
FUNCTIONS OF BLOOD: • Transports nutrients, dissolved gases, enzymes, hormones, and waste products • Regulates body temperature, pH and electrolytes • Protects body from invaders • Restricts loss of fluids
COMPONENTS OF BLOOD: • Plasma: liquid portion of blood that • contains water, dissolved fats, salts, sugars and proteins • Red Blood Cells (erythrocytes): transport oxygen • White Blood Cells (leukocytes): protect body against • invasion by foreign cells or substances • Platelets: Responsible for the clotting of blood
TYPES OF BLOOD CELLS: • Erythrocytes: “red blood cells” aka RBC’s • slightly indented, flattened disks • RBC’s have a life span of 4 months • contain an iron-rich protein called hemoglobin. Blood gets its bright red color when hemoglobin picks up oxygen in the lungs. As the blood flows, hemoglobin releases oxygen to the tissues.
Leukocytes: “white blood cells” aka WBC’s • defend against infection • 2 kinds of leukocytes: Phagocytes Lymphocytes both travel along the walls of blood vessels to fight germs like bacteria and viruses • the body contains fewer WBC’s than RBC’s, but the body will produce more WBC’s during an infection
