  2. invented in December 1891 by the Canadian clergyman, educator, and physician James Naismith. • At first the game involved elements of American football, soccer, and hockey, and the first ball used was a soccer ball. • Teams started with 9 players and the goals were wooden peach baskets affixed to the wall. • By 1897, teams of 5 became standard. • The first pro league was formed in 1898 to protect players from exploitation and to promote a less rough game • By the 1950s basketball had become a major college sport. • In 1949, the National Basketball League and the Basketball Association of America merged to create the National Basketball Association (NBA). The two main leagues of basketball today are the Professionals and Amateurs. • Professionals include NBA, NBDL, CBA, USBL, WNBA, and ABA. • The amateurs include the NCAA (college basketball) and PREP (high school basketball). • Today, the NBA has reached 30 franchises and continues to evolve as one of the premier sports leagues in the world. The Women's National Basketball Association is the governing body and rule making organization of women's professional basketball in the United States. • The National Basketball Association is the world’s premier men’s professional basketball league and one of the major professional sports leagues of North America. • The final playoff round, a best-of-seven series between the victories of both conferences, is known as the NBA Finals, and the series is held annually in June.
