  2. Bell Ringer • What is a soliloquy? • INTERESTING FACT: 101 Dalmatians and Peter Pan (Wendy) are the only two Disney cartoon features with both parents that are present and don't die throughout the movie

What is Theatre? • For over 2,000 years people have gone to the theatre for entertainment. • Theatre is storytelling • Theatre people are very skilled storytellers • Theatre stories also teach us something about he theatre as well as about human behavior, political ideas, social problems, or other aspects of our culture

Defining Theatre • Theatre is a unique live event that involves actors and audience that happens, in a particular palace at a particular time, that takes place in the present tense and yet has a predetermined structure, that uses understood conventions to communicate through all 5 senses and that has a lasting impact on the audience

  6. 2 & 3 traits of theatre • Actors- without actors theater cannot happen • Without actors there is no action • Audience- without an audience theatre cannot happen • Theatre is the experience you enjoy when you respond to the actions performed by actors in a gathering of strangers • HERD ANIMALS a crowd that has gathered together for a common purpose • Some people can have a negative influence on your theatre experience

  7. Trait 4 & 5 particular place & time • Theatre happens in a particular place • Usually designed for it • Theatre happens only when the actors and audience convene in a particular place and time

Trait 6 & 7 a present tense & predetermined location • Theatre is a present tense event • Audio and video recordings of theatre are not present tense they are past tense events • Theatre has an organized structure • When you attend a performance you will recognize that the event usually is divided into lengthy segments called acts and sometimes is divided further into shorter segments called scenes • The acts have numbers and sometimes the scenes have both numbers and names. For example Act One Scene Three

Trait 10- communication through all 5 senses • Theatre is a form of communication and because it is a live event we receive it through all 5 of our senses simultaneously • We see and hear live theatre the same way we see and hear drama on TV, but we also experience live theatre though our other three senses; we smell it, taste it and feel it • A fragrance might allude you to the scenes meaning; biscuits cooking we understand how they would taste in our mouth • The 5th of our senses is feeling which is where we use or emotions; or empathy, a word that describes the human capacity for participating in another's feelings

Why we value theatre • It involves your sense of humanity, for what it truly means to be human • If provides you with wonderful examples of how people behave in moments of celebrations or stress and how the behave in relationship to their families, their societies, their governments, their deities. • Studying theatre increases your knowledge and expands your thinking • It will teach you new ways to analyze your experiences and equip you to apply your new analytical skills to the many challenges you encounter in other academic courses and throughout your life. • It will also increase your cultures history, the society you live in and the behavior of your fellow humans
