  1. NIH ASSIST MRAM - September 12th, 2013 Sinh Simmons Office of Sponsored Programs

  2. What is ASSIST? • acronym for Application Submission System & Interface for Submission Tracking • web based system for submitting multi-project applications electronically to NIH and other PHS agencies using eRA Commons.

  3. Background • Beginning in 2005 with Small Business Grants, the NIH application process began it’s transition to electronic submissions. • Grants.gov didn’t have the capacity to handle large multi-project applications. • NIH built its own system: ASSIST. • With the development of ASSIST, the final piece of the electronic process is in place.

  4. What’s a multi – project application • Large, multi-project efforts that usually include a varied spectrum of research activities. • Cooperative Agreements: projects wherein there is substantial Federal scientific or programmatic involvement. Substantial involvement means that, after award, scientific or program staff will assist, guide, coordinate, or participate in project activities.

  5. Grant Activity codesthat impact UW • The P series • Perhaps R24s • Most of the U series

  6. What’s familiar? • Use your Commons user ID and password to log in. • There are similarities in the forms/format • Once the application is submitted, a Grants.gov tracking number will be assigned. • Like GrantRunner, you can track the status of the application.

  7. Tips/pointers/suggestions • Use Mozilla Firefox (rather than Internet Explorer.) • Familiarize yourself with the available guidance (i.e. ASSIST User’s Guide, the ASSIST webinar, etc.) • 3 sources of instructions: 1.) SF424 Application Guide (for NIH/PHS agencies); 2.) the FOA; and 3.) the tips on the ASSIST forms.

  8. OSP Updates • Update campus via MRAM • Reach out to Campus Dept. with 9/25/13 deadline • Provide link to NIH ASSIST webcast on OSP website • Create ASSIST webpage on OSP website (coming soon) • Schedule a “lesson learned” after 9/25/13 submission, collect feedback and share tips via OSP ASSIST webpage • Create OSP internal SME
