  1. HYDROGEN – The Fuel of the Future?

  2. Both Honda and BMW believe Hydrogen is the fuel of future.Check out the following links to see the progress these two multi-national companies have made so far: http://automobiles.honda.com/fcx-clarity/ Press the link to watch James May from Top Gear driving the Honda Clarity http://www.bmw.com/com/en/insights/technology/efficient_dynamics/phase_2/clean_energy/bmw_hydrogen_7.html

  3. BMW’s approach is to use hydrogen as a direct replacement for petrol. • Internal combustion is used to power the vehicle. • Find out what the products of combustion of petrol and hydrogen are. • What are the benefits and problems of using both fuels? • Include word equations and balanced symbol equations. • Present your findings as an information booklet or Powerpoint presentation.

  4. Honda’s approach is to react hydrogen with oxygen, from the air, in a fuel cell. The fuel cell produces electricity. The electricity then powers the electric motor, which in turn drives the front wheels. Water vapour and heat are the only by products. Click on the car to see a 360o view

  5. How the Honda FCX works Honda claims: “FCX Clarity is much more efficient than conventional gasoline-powered vehicles in converting chemical energy into power.” Click here for a link explaining the evidence

  6. How does a Fuel cell work? - 1 Click here to watch a short video.

  7. How does a Fuel cell work?- 2

  8. How does a Fuel cell work? • Using the information given and internet sites such as: • http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/fcv_pem.shtml • Produce a comic strip explaining how a fuel cell works. • Using your chemistry knowledge make sure you include the following key words taken from the Core and Additional science syllabus: • Catalyst Cathode • Anode Electrolyte • Ions Protons • Electrons Current • Can you include any details of: • Where are fuel cells are used? • Their difficulty of manufacture • Their efficiency • Who invented them? • Their cost

  9. The Hydrogen Highway • 1) Produce an information leaflet about Hydrogen as a potential fuel of the future. • Include the properties of hydrogen and how they • are related to it’s uses. • Include the dangers of using hydrogen. Before you undertake this task first watch a video by clicking on this link. Then use Google to research ‘The Hindenburg’. Include what you find into your leaflet. • 2) Now investigate the Hydrogen Highway. • Follow the link: http://www.hydrogenhighway.com/ • Look into the future. Write an essay to explain what • obstacles would be in the way for the UK to produce • our own Hydrogen Highway.
