VCCV syllable pattern • A syllable is a word part that has one sound • He wrote visas from morning to night VCCV • Many words with this pattern divide between the consonants • The first syllable is closed, so the word begins with a short vowel sound: MOR-nihng. • When 2 or more consonants blend – stand for a single sound. Don’t divide between blends. another

VCV syllable pattern • The refugee was upset VCV • To decode a word with this pattern, you should first try dividing it after the consonant and pronouncing the syllable with a short vowel sound: REHF-yoo-jee. • If that doesn’t sound like a familiar word, you should divide the word after the vowel and use a long vowel sound.

  4. A young Jewish boy stared in the window. VCCV • This word has the VCCV pattern. I know most words with this pattern divide between the two consonants. I can divide this word between the letters n and d. That makes the first syllable closed, so the vowel has a short sound: WIHN-doh. That sounds right, and it makes sense.
