  1. The Sons of God & the Daughters of Men (Genesis 6:1-4)

  2. “Sons of God” - Genesis 6:2 • Fallen Angel Interpretation • Despot (evil rulers) Interpretation • Godly Sethites merged with ungodly Cainites

  3. Fallen angel view • These sinful angels married women & the resulting offspring were called “Nephilim”.

  4. Fallen angel view • Angels called “sons of God” in the OT (Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:7, cf. Psa 89:6; Dan 3:25). • Angels have appeared in human form as males (Gen 19:1, 5: Heb 13:2). • God stopped fallen angels from interfering with His plan (2 Pet 2:4; Jude 6; cf. Gen 3:15).

  5. Fallen angel view - refuted • Angels are spirit beings (Heb 1:7, 13-14; Luke 24:39). In human form they did God’s bidding (Gen 19:1, 5; Heb 13:2). • Jesus said angels do not marry (Matt 22:30; Mark 12:25; Luke 20:34-35). • “Nephilim” lived after the Flood (Num 13:31-34).

  6. Fallen angel view - refuted • “Nephilim” lived before & after the Flood (Num 13:31-34; 1 Pet 3:20). • But only eight souls survived the flood. • “Nephilim” is a Hebrew word meaning: a feller; bully” or tyrant. • Goliath of Gath was one.

  7. Genesis 6:2 • men, from the godly lineage of Seth, called “sons of God” began to pursue fleshly rather than spiritual interests, & took wives of “the daughters of men”, womenwho lived in open rebellion to God.

  8. “Sons of God” - Genesis 6:2 • Denotes: In covenant relationship with God. • Deut 14:1 (ESV) - You are the sons of the LORD your God… • Gal 3:26 – For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

  9. The Context - Genesis 6:2 • Two incompatible lineages (Gen 3:15) • Seth’s: calledon the name of the Lord (Gen 4) • Cain’s: fell deeper into sin (Gen 4) • the great downward spiral:The two lines came together as one (Gen 6:1-4) • God took matters in hand: Flood (Gen 6)

  10. The lesson: Genesis 6:2 • The salt lost its savor; God’s race lost its use-fulness(Matt 5:13; Mark 9:50; Luke 14:34). • Intermarriage with different faiths • Unequal yoke (2 Cor 6:14) • Calamity follows (Jas 4:4)
