How tight is too tight? How short is too short? How low-cut is too low-cut?

Isa.5:20,21– “20 Woe unto them that call evil good , and good evil; that put darkness for light , and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! 21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!”. How tight is too tight?

  1. Isa.5:20,21– “20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! 21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!”

  2. How tight is too tight? How short is too short? How low-cut is too low-cut? How high should the slit go? How sheer is too sheer? Is it okay to wear a bikini? Is it okay for a man to mow the lawn or play sports bare chested? Can I attend the dance? Can I go swimming with members of the opposite sex? Is it okay to look at pornography or watch movies filled with nudity? Many have difficulty answering these questions:

  3. I believe the reason many Christians have such a problem answering these questions is because they want to follow as closely as possible perverted social standards (so they won’t appear to be different from the world) while at the same time trying to serve the Lord (which by nature demands we be different from the world)

  4. Survey of why men and women go to the beach: • 69% of men go to see women in swim suits • only 7% of women said they went to see men • “Beach Motives,” Psychology Today, Dec. 1982, p.10

  5. Can be seen in the Garden of Eden Gen.3:7-11– “7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig-leaves together, and made themselves aprons. 8 And they heard the voice of Jehovah God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Jehovah God amongst the trees of the garden. 9 And Jehovah God called unto the man, and said unto him, Where art thou? 10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. 11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?”

  6. Apron V. 7 Naked (Nude) V. 11 Naked (Relatively) Genesis 3 Gen.3:21– “And Jehovah God made for Adam and for his wife coatsof skins, and clothed them.”

  7. Tunic “From an unused root meaning to cover ... 1) tunic, under-garment; 1a) a long shirt-like garment usually of linen.” – Strongs Concordance “A tunic, worn next the skin ... generally with sleeves, to the knees, but seldom to the ankles, Gen.3:21.” – Wilson’s O.T. Word Studies

  8. Tunic Apron V. 7 Naked (Nude) V. 11 Naked (Relatively) V. 21 Clothed & Modest Genesis 3

  9. Can be seen in Priests Garments Ex.28:40-43– “40 And for Aaron's sons thou shalt make coats, and thou shalt make for them girdles, and head-tires shalt thou make for them, for glory and for beauty. 41 And thou shalt put them upon Aaron thy brother, and upon his sons with him, and shalt anoint them, and consecrate them, and sanctify them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office. 42 And thou shalt make them linen breeches to cover the flesh of their nakedness; from the loins even unto the thighs they shall reach: 43 And they shall be upon Aaron, and upon his sons, when they go in unto the tent of meeting, or when they come near unto the altar to minister in the holy place; that they bear not iniquity, and die: it shall be a statute for ever unto him and unto his seed after him.”

  10. “1) underwear, drawers, trousers; 1a) a priestly undergarment of linen” – BDB/Thayers “A garment, extending from the waist to or just below the knee or to the ankle, and covering each leg separately” – ISBE To expose the thigh was to uncover ones nakedness – cf.Isa.47:2,3

  11. Can be seen in 1 Timothy 2:9,10 1 Tim.2:9,10– “9 (KJS) In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modestapparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; 10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.” Modest: “Orderly, well-arranged, decent, modest” Shamefacedness: “A sense of shame, modesty” Sobriety: “Denotes soundness of mind, soberness, sound judgment”

  12. Can be seen in 1 Peter 3:1-6 1 Pet.3:1-6– “1 In like manner, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, even if any obey not the word, they may without the word be gained by the behavior of their wives; 2 beholding your chaste behavior coupled with fear. 3 Whose adorning let it not be the outward adorning of braiding the hair, and of wearing jewels of gold, or of putting on apparel; 4 but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in the incorruptible apparel of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. 5 For after this manner aforetime the holy women also, who hoped in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands: 6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose children ye now are, if ye do well, and are not put in fear by any terror.”

  13. Can be seen in the word Lasciviousness • “Wanton (acts or) manners as filthy words, indecent bodily movements, unchaste handling of males and females” – Thayer • “Denotes excess, absence of restraint, indecency, wantonness” – Vine • “Lewdness” is defined as “tendency to excite lust”

  14. The Woman’s Body The Bosom (Including cleavage) The Midriff The Loins The Thigh The Tush (backside) These are the very parts God covered on Adam and Eve! y What Body Parts incite lust? • The Man’s Body • The Chest • The Abdomen • The Loins • The Thigh • The Tush (backside) Common sense says that outside of marriage, these should be covered!

  15. Is it decent? When sitting? When bending? Does it reflect my true thinking? Will I have to constantly tug on it to keep my nakedness covered? Will I need a newspaper, magazine, coat or the like to cover myself while sitting? When it reveals my shapely form, exposes or calls attention to my private parts, or reflects seduction, is that really how I ought to dress? Questions to ask:

  16. Mary Quant, “the fashion queen of Britain's 1960's”, and the inventor of the miniskirt, made public boastings of how she intended the clothes she designed to seduce men. • She declared that her creation was for the purpose of making sex (illicit sex) more available in the afternoon. • In an interview she was asked what kind of person today's woman wants to be, and she answered, “A sexual creature. She displays her sexuality instead of this coy business of hiding it. Today she dresses to say, ‘I am sexy. I like men. I enjoy life.’” • Then she made this bold statement: “Mini-clothes are symbolic of those women who want to seduce a man.” • Later in the interview, she was asked where this line of clothing was headed. She responded in one word: “Sex” • – November 13, 1967

  17. Prov.7:10 “The attire of a harlot” 1 Tim.2:9,10 Clothing which “becometh women professing godliness” Bikini Tankini Speedo Short-Shorts Mini-Skirts Halter tops Low-Cut Blouses & Dresses Thong Slit Skirts Tight / Formfitting Strapless Dresses Swimming Trunks See-Through Styles etc …

  18. What Modest Dress Does • Covers nakedness (Gen. 3) • Reflects shamefacedness, sobriety, godliness & good works (1 Tim. 2:9-10) • Reflects purity, reverence & a quiet spirit (1 Peter 3:3-4)

  19. Justifications Some Offer • Some will lust regardless of what I wear. • That’s THEIR problem. They ought to learn to control their minds. • Matt.18:6,7 • It’s hot! • It’s okay at the beach since that is accepted attire for the beach.
