  1. Math 5Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers Instructor: Mrs. Tew Turner

  2. In this lesson we will learn how to add and subtract mixed numbers.

  3. Round these numbers to the nearest thousand. 12,685 13,435 12,921 Math Warm-up Pause Lesson to work.

  4. Round these numbers to the nearest thousand. 12,685 13,000 13,435 13,000 12,921 13,000 Math Warm-up - ANSWERS

  5. In this lesson we will answer the question: How do you add and subtract mixed numbers?

  6. 6 Vocabulary Review divisor- the number that a dividend is divided by. Example: 24 ÷ 4 = 6 4 24

  7. Vocabulary Review fraction – a symbol, such as ¾, used to describe one or more parts of a whole that is divided into equal parts. A fraction can name a part of a whole, a part of a set, a location on a number line, or a division of whole numbers.

  8. Vocabulary Review numerator - the number above the fraction bar in a fraction. denominator - the number below the fraction bar in a fraction. numerator 1 2 denominator

  9. Vocabulary Review Least Common Multiple: (LCM), the least number that is a common multiple of two or more numbers. • Least Common Denominator: (LCD), The least common multiple of the denominators of two or more fractions.

  10. Vocabulary Review mixed number – a whole number and a fraction. Ex.

  11. Vocabulary Review improper fraction – a fraction whose numerator is greater than or equal to its denominator (the fraction is 1 whole or more) Ex.

  12. Connecting to Previous Learning In lesson 26, you learned how to add and subtract fractions. In lesson 27, you learned about the relationship between mixed numbers and improper fractions. In this lesson, we will put the two together.

  13. Connecting to Previous Learning • There are 3 Simple Steps to add or subtract fractions: • Step 1: Make sure the bottom numbers (the denominators) are the same. • Step 2: Add the top numbers (the numerators), put the answer over the denominator. • Step 3: Simplify the fraction (if needed). • The numerator or denominator will be • prime numbers if they are simplified.

  14. Connecting to Previous Learning Steps to write a mixed number as an improper fraction: Divide the numerator by the denominator. Write the remainder as a fraction.

  15. Connecting to Previous Learning Steps to write an improper fraction as a mixed number: Multiply the denominator of the fraction by the whole number. Add the numerator of the fraction. Write using the same denominator.

  16. 3 4 1 2 What is 2 + 3 ? Step 1: Convert to improper fractions + + 7 2 1 2 3 4 11 4 = 3 2 = x x

  17. 3 4 1 2 What is 2 + 3 ? Step 2: Convert fractions to have common denominator (if needed) x2 11 4 7 2 14 4 = x2 LCM: 4- 4,8,12 2- 2,4,6

  18. 3 4 1 2 What is 2 + 3 ? Step 3: Add the numerator because it is an addition problem. 11 4 14 4 25 + =

  19. 3 4 1 2 What is 2 + 3 ? Step 4: Write the new numerator over the denominator 11 4 14 4 25 4 + =

  20. 3 4 1 2 What is 2 + 3 ? Step 5: Write the improper fraction as a mixed number 25 4 25 ÷ 4 = 6 r. 1 1 4 6

  21. 3 4 1 2 What is 2 + 3 ? Step 6: Simplify the fraction 1 4 6 This is already in simplest form.

  26. In your Math Notebook Quick Check 1. Molly's Desserts made a batch of fresh scones with 3 7/10 pounds of butter and 2 1/10 pounds of sugar. How much more butter than sugar was used? Pause Lesson to work.

  27. In your Math Notebook Quick Check 2. Today Molly is carrying her history textbook and her lunch in her backpack. If the history textbook weighs 2 1/6 pounds and her lunch weighs 1 4/12 pounds, how much weight is in Molly's backpack? Pause Lesson to work.

  28. Quick Check - ANSWERS 1 3/5 pounds more butter 1 ½ pounds

  29. Good Work with this lesson. Today you learned how to add and subtract mixed numbers.
