  4. Planning • Why are you talking to them? • Who are you talking to? • How long have you got? • What are the points you are going to cover?

  5. Preparation • Outline and sketch slides • Prepare slides • Proof read • Prepare notes • brief keywords and phrases, except maybe first couple of paragraphs

  6. Preparation (slides) • Use Images & Graphics • Minimise text & numbers • Light text on dark background • Avoid distracting backgrounds • Use large fonts • Progressive disclosure

  7. Practice • Rehearse • Get feedback, and use it. • Speak loudly & clearly • Use short simple sentences • Avoid jargon & abbrev. • Vary pitch, tone, volume, speed and pauses

  8. Performance • Avoid distracting mannerisms • Relax, be enthusiastic • Make eye contact • Keep an eye on the time remaining

  9. Performance (cont’d) • Explain figures, and • point to important aspects • Give a clear and concise summary, • then stop. • Don’t go overtime. Ever.

  10. Questions • Anticipate likely questions and prepare answers • Stall while thinking about the answer

  11. Remember 5 Ps rule! Proper Practice Prevents Poor Performance.
