  3. Active Learning • You can greatly increase your understanding of the material covered by taking your own notes. This is especially true for kinesthetic learners

  4. Cornell Note Taking System • This is how you can take notes in the Video classroom • You can also download notes from the online classroom and then rewrite them for your own use.

  6. Download a copy of the T Note • Look for a copy of a blank T note in the Course Documents Section, you can use that one

  12. Listening Skills • Specific of listening are also addressed in the Critical Thinking Assessment taken earlier • Listening has many components • Difficult to do when busy!

  13. Components of Listening • Being conscious about what is being said • Fighting distractions • Persist in listening to something even when it is boring • Ask questions • Take notes

  14. Withhold Judgment • Be careful that you don’t “tune someone out” when you don’t like or are having trouble understanding. • My grandfather just turned off his hearing aid whenever my grandmother started talking!

  15. Active Listening • Ask instructor or classmates to repeat things that are said • Try to rephrase the most important points • Explain the concept to another student

  16. Memory • Encoding-the first contact with information • Storage-becomes stored in memory • Retrieval-information used in new form

  17. Sleep and eat correctly! Decide you CAN remember things Make sure you are memorizing from your understanding, not just terms written in the book Select the most important points Keep notes with you and study during short intervals, breaks at work, waiting in line Improving Memory

  20. Study Skills • Review online notes and lectures • Review your own notes • Set a study schedule • Ask yourself questions • Apply the information to real world situations

  21. Take Care of Yourself • Get as much sleep as you can before tests • Eat well before tests (and always) • Take some deep breaths while taking the test • Don’t be afraid to ask questions, even in the video classroom

  22. Taking the Test • When you get the test, briefly review the entire test to get a sense of it • Know the ground rules, can you use notes, a book, work in pairs? • READ THE DIRECTIONS!

  23. Think Critically About the Questions • Recall basic principles-formulas, procedures, theories and concepts • Compare and contrast • Support your answer with examples (in your head) • Find the best answer • Don’t make lots of changes in answers!
