Hepatitis C Project National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO)

The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) is leading the Hepatitis C Project, which aims to educate and enhance the capacity of local public health agencies to prevent and control viral hepatitis. This project has funded workshops, integrated prevention activities into existing programs, and included viral hepatitis prevention as a topic in the NACCHO Annual Conference.

  2. NACCHO’s Mission • NACCHO is the national voice of local public health. • NACCHO promotes national policy, develops resources and programs, and supports the development of effective local public health practice and systems that protect and improve the health of communities.

  3. Overview of NACCHO • NACCHO is the national nonprofit organization representing local public health agencies (including city, county, metro, district, and Tribal agencies). • Over 3,000 LPHAs nationwide, 1,100 active members serving 75 percent of the U.S. population. • 60% represent non-metropolitan areas • 40% represent metropolitan areas

NACCHO Project Areas • Research & Development (NEDSS, Bioterrorism Preparedness) • Community Health Initiatives (Viral Hepatitis, Immunizations, Primary Care, MCH, Tobacco Control, HIV/AIDS) • Environmental Health (Food Safety, Brownfields Redevelopment) • Community Health Assessment (MAPP, PACE-EH tools)

  5. Hepatitis C Project Overview • Cooperative agreement with CDC since 1997 • Project goals: • Education of LPHAs on viral hepatitis prevention and control • Enhancing capacity of LPHAs to address viral hepatitis

Accomplishments • NACCHO’s Board of Directors passage of the Resolution Concerning the Local Public Health Response to Hepatitis C No. 98-12 • Funding of nineteen LPHAs to convene and develop educational workshop on viral hepatitis prevention for health professionals in their communities. • Funding of two LPHAs to integrate viral hepatitis prevention activities into existing HIV/STD program infrastructure.

Accomplishments • Viral hepatitis prevention has been included as a topic area at NACCHO Annual Conference for the past four years • Completion and analysis of an assessment survey disseminated to 1200 LPHAs nationwide on their HIV and HCV informational and programmatic needs. • NACCHO Exchange article entitled “You Can Make a Difference: The Impact of a Small Health Department on Hepatitis C”.

  10. Current Project Activities • Funding of local public health agencies to develop, implement, and evaluate hepatitis education workshops in their communities. For RFP and application form, visit www.naccho.org. Applications are due by March 10, 2003.

Current Project Activities, cont. • Peer Assistance Advisors: Former grantees are being asked to serve as peer advisors to provide current grantees with additional technical assistance and enhance networking and learning experience among sites. • Outcome Evaluation of previously funded programs • Comprehensive listing of available resources from former grantee programs, including pre/post tests, strategic plans, and provider education packets.

  12. Current Project Activities, cont. • Regular communication with our membership on hepatitis resources, federal updates, and items of interest via NACCHO’s newsletters, Public Health Dispatch and NACCHO Exchange. • Online searchable clearinghouse of model and promising practices, including hepatitis prevention programs. Criteria: LPHA role in program, level of collaboration, sustainability of program, innovativeness/responsiveness, and evaluation measures. Submissions reviewed by Advisory Committees.
