  5. Democracy • Definition: A form of government in which all eligible citizens participate equally.

  6. Direct v. Elected Representation Direct Elected Representation The people elect someone to vote for them and represent their interests. • Every person votes on laws and has input into in decisions that are made.

  14. Hawaii: Constitutional Monarchy

  15. Absolute MonarchyPrior to 1840 • Hawaii was an Absolute Monarchy, under Kamehameha I and then under Liholiho and Kaahumanu • Unlimited power • Monarchs could make laws but did not need to follow them • Power is centralized in the monarchy

  16. Constitutional Monarchy • Definition: A form of government in which a monarch serves as head of state within the limits of a Constitution.

  18. King Executive Powers • Commander in Chief • Make treaties and negotiate with other countries • Appoints Judges • Veto Laws • Declares war in times of emergency • Chief Justice on the Supreme Court • Member of the House of Nobles
