Democracy • Definition: A form of government in which all eligible citizens participate equally.
Direct v. Elected Representation Direct Elected Representation The people elect someone to vote for them and represent their interests. • Every person votes on laws and has input into in decisions that are made.
Characteristics of United States Democracy • Equality • Freedom • Rights • Rule of Law (Constitution)
US Government • Separation of Powers: • Each branch has it’s own duties and responsibilities • Checks and Balances: • Makes sure that no one branch of government becomes too powerful and takes control

Absolute MonarchyPrior to 1840 • Hawaii was an Absolute Monarchy, under Kamehameha I and then under Liholiho and Kaahumanu • Unlimited power • Monarchs could make laws but did not need to follow them • Power is centralized in the monarchy
Constitutional Monarchy • Definition: A form of government in which a monarch serves as head of state within the limits of a Constitution.
King Executive Powers • Commander in Chief • Make treaties and negotiate with other countries • Appoints Judges • Veto Laws • Declares war in times of emergency • Chief Justice on the Supreme Court • Member of the House of Nobles
Legislative Powers House of Nobles House of Commons Elected by the People Make Laws • 16 members including the King • Advises the King • Makes Laws
Judicial Branch • Supreme Court • 4 people • King, Kuhina Nui and 2 other people appointed by the Representative Body • Interpret Laws • Settle disputes
