  11. Lifting the Veil Believe it or not, here is a story of the magic done by a blind man The night that a blind man helped me to see last-minute:adj. done at the last possible time 最后的;归根究底的 accompany:vt.formal a. to go somewhere with sb 陪同;陪伴 e.g. I was just doing some last-minute preparations. 1. It was late afternoon when the chairman of our Bangkok-based company gave me a last-minute assignment: I would leave the next day to accompany an important Chinese businessman to tourist sites in northern Thailand. 2. Silently fuming, I stared at my cluttered desk. The stacks of paper testified to a huge backlog of work, even though I had been putting in seven-day weeks. How will I ever catch up? I wondered. 3. Early the next morning I met a polite and elegant man wearing fine clothes. After a one-hour flight, we spent the day visiting attractions along with hundreds of other tourists, most of them overloaded with cameras and souvenirs. I remember feeling disdain for this collection of ogling humanity. 4. That evening my Chinese companion and I climbed into a minibus to go to dinner and a show, one which I had attended many times before. clutter:vt. to cover or fill a space or room with too many things, so that it looks very untidy杂乱的,凌乱的,挤满的 be cluttered (up) with sth backlog:[c usually singular]a large amount of work that you need to complete, esp. work that should already have been completed积累(积压待办事项) backlog of fume:vt. & vi.to be angry about sth(对…)大为生气,十分恼火 fume at/over/about e.g. 我得要求你陪我去一趟警察局。 I must ask you to accompany me to the police station. put sth ↔ in:to spend time or use energy working or practising sth花费,耗费,投入(时间、心思等)also put sth into sth testify to sth:written to show clearly that sth is the case作为某事的证明;表明;说明 SYN- evidence 尽管每周我把七天的时间都用在了工作上,可堆积如山的文件还是表明我仍有许多工作要做。 She sat in the car, silently fuming about what he’d said. e.g. e.g. She often puts in twelve hours’ work a day. She's putting a lot of work into improving her French. e.g. The empty shops in the high street testify to the depth of the recession. The excellence of Shakespeare's plays testifies to his genius. disdain:[u]formala complete lack of respect that you show for someone or sth because you think they are not important or good enough轻蔑,鄙视disdain forSYN- contempt 记得当时我对这伙人的好奇和贪心感到不屑。 e.g. I have nothing but disdain for such a person.

I wondered why he held his head motionless at an odd angle, as though he were in meditation. The truth struck me when I saw the pale-coloured cane beside him. He was blind. 5. The man told me he had lost his sight in an accident when he was a teenager. But this did not prevent him from traveling alone. Now in his late 60s, he had mastered the skill of sightless tourism, using his remaining four senses to create pictures in his mind. 6. Turning to face me, he slowly extended a hand, which, like a soft animal, explored the contours of my face. Behind me someone switched on a light, and I could see his luxuriant silvery hair and strong, craggy face. His eyes lay misted and deep in their sockets. “Could I please sit beside you at the dinner?” he asked. “And I’d love it if you’d describe a little of what you see.” luxurious:adj. very expensive, beautiful, and comfortable奢侈的,豪华的;非常舒适的n.luxury 我身后有人打开了一盏灯,能够看得见他一头浓密的银发,他的脸坚毅而棱角分明,双眼迷蒙且眼窝深陷。 craggy: adj.having a face with many deep lines on it 轮廓分明有皱纹的 luxuriant:adj. growing strongly and thickly 茂盛的;浓密的 n.luxuriance

  13. Lifting the Veil By David Lambourne be/get caught up in sth: to be or get involved in sth, especially sth bad被卷入;陷入 7. “I’d be happy to,” I replied. 8. My guest walked ahead toward the restaurant with new-found friends. The blind man and I followed, caught up in a long string of tourists. My hand cupped his elbow to steer him, but he stepped forward unfalteringly, his shoulders squared, his head high, as though he were guiding me. 9. We found a table close to the stage. As we waited for our drinks, the blind man said, “The music seems out of tune to our Western ears, but it has charm. Please describe the musicians.” 10. I hadn’t noticed the five men performing at the side of the stage as a prelude to the show. “They’re seated cross-legged, dressed in loose white cotton shirts and baggy black trousers with bright-red sashes. Three are young, one middle-aged and one elderly. One beats a small drum, another plucks a wooden stringed instrument, and the other three have smaller, cello-like pieces they play with a bow.” steer:vt.to guide someone to a place, especially while touching them带领;引导 steer sb towards/to etc sth e.g. I didn't want to get caught up in endless petty arguments. square your shoulders/ shoulders:square: to stand straight and push your shoulders back, usually to show your determination Innocent passers-by got caught up in the riots. e.g. Hesteered me to a table and sat me down in a chair. out of tune:playing or singing higher or lower than the correct musical note跑调;走调 对我来说,乐队没有走调,不过我没有欣赏音乐的才能。 e.g. The band doesn't sound out of tune to me, but then I've no ear for music. e.g. The fighting in the streets may be a prelude to more serious trouble.

  14. Lifting the Veil By David Lambourne fashion A (from/ out of B)/ fashion B (into A):to make or shape sth., especially with your hands 11. He smiled. “And these small instruments are made of …?” 12. I looked again. “Wood…but the spherical sound box is fashioned out of a whole coconut shell,” I said, suppressing my surprise. 13. As the lights dimmed, the blind man asked, “What do your fellow tourists look like?” 14. “All nationalities, colors, shapes and sizes,” I whispered. “Very few are neatly or tastefully dressed.” 15. As I lowered my voice further and spoke close to his ear, the blind man leaned his head eagerly toward me . I had never before been listened to with such rapt intensity. 16. “Very close to us is an elderly Japanese woman, whose profile is partially lit from the stage,” I said. rapt:adj.writtenso interested in sth that you do not notice anything else全神贯注的,入迷的,出神的 以前从来没有人这样专注而紧张地听我讲过话。 e.g. We listened to her amazing story with rapt attention.

Lifting the Veil By David Lambourne “Just beyond her a blond Scandinavian boy about five, with a cute turned-up nose, is leaning forward, creating a second illuminated profile just below hers. They’re motionless, waiting for the performance to start. It’s the perfect living portrait of childhood and old age, of Europe and Asia.” 17. “Yes, yes, I see them,” the blind man said quietly, smiling. 18. A curtain at the back of the stage opened. Six girls in their early teen appeared, and I described their sarong-like silk skirts, white blouses with shoulder sashes, and gold-coloured head-dressed like small crowns, with flexible points that moved in rhythm with the dance. “On their fingertips are golden fingernails perhaps four inches long.” I told the blind man. “The nails accentuate each elegant movement of their hands. It’s a delightful effect.” 19. He smiled and nodded. “How wonderful-I would love to touch one of those fingernails.” accentuate:vt.to make sth more noticeable强调;使更突出 e.g. The tight jumper only accentuated his fat stomach.

  16. Lifting the Veil By David Lambourne excuse yourself:to say politely that you need to leave a place 20. When the first performance ended, I excused myself and went to talk to the theater manager. Upon returning, I told my companion, “You’ve been invited backstage.” 21. A few minutes later he was standing next to one of the dancers, her little crowned head hardly reaching his chest. She timidly extended both hands toward him, the metal fingernails glinting in the overhead light. His hands, four times as large, reached out slowly and clasped them as though they were cradling two tiny exotic birds. As he felt the smooth, curving sharpness of the metal tips, the girl stood quite still, gazing up into his face with an expression of awe. A lump formed in my throat. 22.As the evening progressed, the more I observed and was rewarded with excited nods of the head, the more I discovered: colors, patterns and designs of local costumes; the texture of skin under soft lights; the movement of long, black Asian hair as elegant heads angled to the music;

  17. Lifting the Veil By David Lambourne the intense expressions of the musicians as they played; even the flashing white smile of our waitress in the half-darkness. 23. Back at the hotel lobby, with my Chinese guest still in the company of others, the blind man extended a large hand, which gripped mine warmly. It remained there for a moment, then traveled to my elbow and shoulder. Heads turned in surprise as the cane fell with a clatter to the marble floor. He made no attempt toretrieve it, but instead pulled me toward him and hugged me tightly. “How beautifully you saw everything for me,” he whispered. “I can never thank you enough.” 24. Later the realization struck me: I should have thanked him. I was the one who had been blind. He had helped me lift the veil that grows so quickly over our eyes in this hectic world, and to see all those things I’d failed to marvel at before.

About a week after our trip, the chairman summoned me to his office and told me he had received a call from the Chinese executive, who expressed great satisfaction with the trip. “Well done,” the chairman said, smiling. “I knew you could do the magic.” 26. I was not able to tell him that the magic had been done to me.

  21. Extended Activities H Dictation Read more Translation

  22. Dictation P3 Taste for natural beauty often changes with the times. The sunflower is a good case in point. The sunflower has been grown in Britain for four centuries, but it spent a long time out of favour. For years it was looked upon as something of a joke flower, climbing to a ridiculous height and bearing a top-heavy head that soon sagged and withered away. Some people grew them for their edible seeds, while school-children, interested by their size, strove to rival the world record of about seven metres. Not even the labours of the great artists such as Vincent van Gogh could transform the sunflower's unfashionable image. In the past two or three years, all this has changed. Vases of sunflowers appear in the corners of smart shops, departments and boutiques. They creep into the background of graceful advertisement for high fashion. Seed businessmen and florists report unprecedented demand for them for gardens and ambitious indoor arrangements.

e.g. Hearing the news, he jumped with joy. While walking in the garden,he hurt his leg. Having finished his homework, he went out. • ___ a reply, he decided to write again. A. Not receiving B. Receiving not C. Not having received D. Having not received e.g. Not receiving any letter from him, I gave him a call. Walking down the street, I ran into Sue. =As he had finished his homework, he went out. Because he had not received a reply, he decided to write again.

You will only make yourself more tired, keeping on your feet. Using the book, I find it useful. B B

e.g. The test finished, we began our holiday. Weather permitting, we are going to visit you tomorrow. He came into the room, his ears red with cold.

  28. Grammar P3 Absolute Nominative Structure2 e.g. He came out of the library, a large book under his arm. The meeting over, everyone tired to go home earlier. B.It being Sunday, you needn't go to school. Being Sunday, you needn't go to school. A. Because it is Sunday, you needn't go to school. A. After (when) all the officials had arrived, the meeting was declared open. B.All the officials having arrived, the meeting was declared open. A. If weather permits , we'll go to the Summer Palace. B. Weather permitting ,we'll go to the Summer Palace. All the work done, you can have a rest. =All the work is done and you can have a rest. 逻辑谓语是adj./adv 时,前面省略being The meeting (being) over, they all went home.

  29. Grammar P3 Absolute Nominative Structure3 (四) 有时,独立主格结构可以由with引出 : 表伴随时,既可用分词的独立结构,也可用with的复合结构:with +名词(代词)+现在分词/过去分词/形容词/副词/不定式/介词短语  • The murder was brought in, with his hands ___ behind his back. A.being tiedB. having tiedC. to be tiedD. tied 注意: • 有时, 这种结构中的冠词或物主代词可省去,称为泛指结构,反之,称为特指结构. e.g. He came out, with an umbrella in his hand. The guards stood at attention, with guns on their shoulders. D e.g. Judging from her accent, she must be an American. Generally speaking, the living costs are relatively higher in cities. Talking of the world resources , they are very limited. = …, umbrella in hand. = …, guns on shoulders.

  30. Translations for reference P3 Parents must accompany their children to school because the traffic is too busy on the road. Loaded with packs, I was unable to walk fast. He made several attempts before finally passing the university entrance examinations. Young people tend to feel disdain for anything old-fashioned. This novel testifies to his rich knowledge of the culture of the tribe. Due to a backlog of paper work, the company had to put off interviewing the job applicants. The teacher pointed out that there were several places in his performance that were out of tune.
