Current EOL Curriculum at UNE • Spectrum of Aging lecture • Two hour lecture for first year students • Current paradigms of aging, death, and dying • Medical residents shared experiences • Forum for discussion • Death, Dying, and Bereavement lecture • One hour lecture for first year students • History of death • Define “good death”

  3. Second Year EOL Curriculum • Course on Legal and Ethical Issues in EOL care • Palliative care • Physician assisted suicide • Euthanasia • Surrogates • Living Wills • DNR Orders • Hospice rotation • House visit accompanying a hospice RN

  4. Future Goals for UNE Curriculum • Increase overall exposure to hospice • Lectures on key topics concerning EOL care • Create opportunities for students to work closely in the fields of hospice and palliative care

  5. Death and Dying Interest Group • Work with AMSA and the Geriatric Club • Bi-monthly meetings • Continue to bring lecturers on EOL issues

  6. Volunteer Program • Contact local hospice • Lunch lecture with volunteer coordinator • Corresponding viewing of “To Live Until I Die”

  7. Pain Lecture • Dr. from a local hospice for a lunch lecture open to MSI’s and MSII’s • Myths vs. facts concerning narcotics and other pain medications • Dosing and conversion factors • Appropriate medications and adjuvants for different types of pain

  8. Communicating Bad News Lecture • Dr. or Social Worker from a local hospice for a lunch lecture open to MSI’s and MSII’s • Cover important steps in communicating difficult news, particularly a terminal diagnosis • Include case studies and role play

  9. Preceptor Opportunity • Work with preceptor office to create a hospice preceptorship • Available to students as an elective in the second year • Student would make regular visits with a hospice doctor while participating in providing care

  10. Overall Goal • Increase UNE student awareness and exposure to End of Life Care
