Engaging Stakeholders Why engage stakeholders? What some key issues Next steps for TPB
Why engage? Greater efficiency in policy making Better policy decisions Greater legitimacy More transparency Process for evaluation and accountability
Key issues and questions for TPB Who are the stakeholders? How best to involve them? What is the TPB role – advice on strategy development or implementation? Independent or part of Government? Location in Government and relationship to Ministers
What Stakeholders? People with experience of poverty Voluntary and community sector Employers UK Govt departments Academics/researchers Trade unions Health boards, LAs, Economic Development
Involving the People in Poverty People with direct experience bring important insights to processes such has TPB May need additional support to be involved – capacity building, covering of expenses etc. Should be wary of tokenism – need for involvement of more than one individual Involvement should be structured through some process – not a representational role, but needs transparency Involvement should seek to reflect the realities and dynamics of poverty
Involving other Stakeholders List of potential stakeholders very wide – priorities need to be established Should consider means of recruitment – formal applications will increase transparency. May also considered targeted recruitment Need to address issues of equalities – must reflect the realities of poverty Should take into account the ability of members to engage with wider networks
