  3. The Resume • The Purpose • One specific purpose - To win an interview! • It is a marketing tool/a personal advertisement • Statistics • 1 in 200 resumes are interviewed • 3 - 9 seconds to capture the readers attention

  4. The Resume • Content • Name, address, telephone, email, website • Objective/Summary • Education • Work Experience • Special Skills • Volunteer Work • Participation on “teams”

  5. The Resume • Spell Check (Canada/US) • Grammar Check • Have several people proofread • White/off white 8 1/2 X 11 paper • 10 - 14 point font • Do not fold • 2 page maximum • Action words/Accomplishments

  6. The Cover Letter • Purpose • To highlight pertinent components of your resume • Almost always read after the resume • Specific to the job you are applying for • Audience • Address to a specific individual • Know what the recipient is looking for

The Cover Letter • Content • You want the reader to know • Why you want to work for them • How you fit with the company • How you qualify for the job • What you offer over and above the competition • Use a header (resume and cover letter) • References • separate page • Hand out at the interview

The Interview • Pre Interview • Key people in the organization • Major products or services • Size in terms of sales and employees • Locations other than your community • Organizational structure of the company • Major competitors • View of the company by clients, suppliers, and competition • Latest news reports on the company or on local or national news that affects the company • Prepare for possible questions (behavioral descriptive)

The Interview • Actual Interview • “A Picture is worth a thousand words” • Arrive on time. • Introduce yourself in a courteous manner. • Read company materials while you wait. • Have a firm handshake. • Listen (do rush to fill the dead space). • Use body language to show interest. • Smile, nod, give nonverbal feedback to the interviewer. • Ask about the next step in the process. • Thank the interviewer.

  11. Working A Career Fair • Come prepared for an interview • Know who is going to be there • Know your audience • Have a resume ready • Book an appointment • Dress for success
