  4. Review • Basis is to differentiate between domestic and foreign • Domestic signals notify the Immune System they are good for the body • Foreign objects are unable to replicate password • Recognizing “self” is vital to the success of the Immune System

Review • Humoral immunity is the action of antibodies that circulate in blood and lymph • “B Cells” • Cell mediated immunity defends the body from viruses, fungi and other pathogens by using macrophages and T Cells • Surpressor T Cells keep the immune system in check • Inhibit immune response once infection is under control

  6. Immunity • How can we create our own immunity? • How does that work?

  7. Vaccination • Cowpox prevented smallpox • Vaccinations are injections of a weakened form of a pathogen, to produce immunity

  8. Active Immunity • Vaccinations stimulate immune system with antigens • Immune system responds by producing memory B cells and memory T Cells • Quicken and strengthen response

  9. Passive Immunity • Antibodies produced against a pathogen by other individuals or animals can be used to produce temporary immunity • Antibodies then introduced into individual’s blood. • Only temporary • Why do you think this is only temporary?
