Equal Parts • To be a fraction, a shape must have EQUAL parts. Equal parts means that all parts are the same size. Do these shapes show equal parts? Why do you think so?
One Half • Think about when your parents say you get to eat half of an apple. How much of the apple do you really get? • What does half mean? • Half means you get one part out of two EQUAL parts. • That means you would split the apple into 2 EQUAL parts and you would get one part
One Half • What does this fraction look like? • 1/2 or Do these fractions show 1/2? Remember, for it to show 1/2, the shape has to be split into 2 EQUAL parts and one of those parts needs to be shaded in. 1 2
One Third • Think about what you learned about one half. What do you think one third means? • It means one out of three parts. • That means, a shape is split into three EQUAL parts and one of the three parts would be shaded in.
One Third • What does this fraction look like? • 1/3 or • Do these fractions show 1/3? Remember, for it to show 1/3, the shape has to be split into 3 EQUAL parts and one of those parts needs to be shaded in. 1 3
Other Thirds • What do you think two thirds looks like? • 2/3 or • What would a shape look like if two thirds of the shape was filled in? • The shape would be split into thirds (three EQUAL parts) and two of the three parts would be shaded in. • Do these show 2/3? 2 3
One Fourth • Think about what you learned about one half and one third. What do you think one fourth means? • It means one out of four parts. • That means, a shape is split into four EQUAL parts and one of the four parts would be shaded in.
One fourth • What does this fraction look like? • 1/4 or Do these fractions show 1/4? Remember, for it to show 1/4, the shape has to be split into 4 EQUAL parts and one of those parts needs to be shaded in. 1 4
Other Fourths • Two fourths • 2/4 or : The shape is split into 4 EQUAL parts and two of the parts are filled in. • Three fourths • 3/4 or : The shape is split into 4 EQUAL parts and three of the parts are filled in. • Do these shapes show 2/4, 3/4, or neither? 2 4 3 4
One Whole • Think about if you say I’m going to eat the whole apple. What would you eat? • One whole means that the entire shape is filled in. With the fractions we have learned, one whole would look like this: • Two halves: 2/2 • Three thirds: 3/3 • Four fourths: 4/4
Equal parts don’t have to have same shape • The fractions are the same no matter what shape the fraction is, as long as the whole shape is the exact same. • Example: These both show 1/2 and the size of the fraction is equal, even though the shape looks different. • These both show 1/4 and the size of the fraction is equal, even though the shape looks different.
