  2. Fungus-Like Protists fungus-like protists absorb nutrients from living or dead organisms. Ex. Water Mold

  3. Fungi • Characteristics: • Spore producing organisms that absorb nutrients from the environment. • Placed in their own Kingdom – Fungi Kingdom • Consumers • Can not move

  4. Decomposers • Fungi get nutrients by secreting digestive juices onto a food source. • Dead matter • All are made up of eukaryotic cells • Contain a cell wall made of chitin.

  5. Unicellular and multicellular • Many Multicellular Fungi contain fungal filaments called hyphae. • Most hyphae in a fungus form mycelium which makes up most of the fungus.

  6. Different Kinds of Fungi • Fungi are classified based upon their shape and the way they reproduce. • Three main groups: • Zygote Fungi • Sac Fungi • Club Fungi

  7. Important Decomposers • Important decomposers of wood. The nutrients in wood could not recycle itself. • Why is this important for our ecosystem?

  8. Sac Fungi • Reproduce sexually and asexually • Sexual reproduction spores are developed within a microscopic sac that releases them. • Yeast are asexual (budding) and are single celled.
