About the 1930’s • America was suffering from the Great Depression and the dust bowl in the 30’s. • In 1929, Wyatt Earp died in his sleep at 80, the same year of the great stock market crash • In 1930, Charles Lindbergh set the speed record for plane travel across the USA • In 1938, a company produced the first nylon product, which was a toothbrush • In 1939, the World Fair was held in New York City

About Ranching • Ranching is the practice of raising grazing livestock • People who own or work on ranches are called stockgrowers or ranchers • Ranches usually have many structures, such as barns, houses, and fences. • There are usually large spaces, called pastures, for the livestock on ranches • Ranches may be any size, but they are usually large • Ranching is an iconic part of the Wild West, and are usually seen in old western movies with actors like John Wayne • Ranches that cater tourists mostly are called guest ranches

  9. t About Horse Care • Horses need a whole lot of exercise to keep healthy • A horse will become bored and disconnected if nobody is around it much • There should be at least one acre of pasture per horse • Check for poisonous plants in the pasture frequently • Horses need good shelter to protect them from storms • If you stable a horse all day, it needs grooming daily

About Salinas • Many famous people have lived in Salinas • In July of 2009, the population of Salinas was 144,276. • Most of the population is Hispanic • Salinas is located along Highway 101 • The land where Salinas is used to be occupied by the Ensen Indians • The railroad reached Salinas in 1868
