  1. Tim Berners-Lee & his Contribution Megan Bilgri [csc 125.001]

  2. Early life AND EDUCATION “We need diversity of thought in the world to face the new challenges” – Tim Berners-Lee1

  3. Growing up Education Studied at private primary & secondary schools Focus on science Graduated from Oxford University in England in 19762 Earned first-class degree in physics Built his own computer using spare parts he found around campus Hacked the university’s computer system resulting in a ban from the network • Parents were computer scientists2 • They worked on the first commercially sold computer, the Ferranti-Mark 1 • He was “destined” for the field of computing 5

  4. Developing the world wide web “The original idea of the web was that it should be a collaborative space where you can communicate through sharing information” – Tim Berners-Lee1

  5. Working at cern • Started working at CERN (European Center for Nuclear Research) after he graduated college3 • Located in Switzerland • Particle physics laboratory • Lee worked as a consultant/software engineer 4

  6. The Prototype 7 • called ENQUIRE3 • Used hypertext to communicate with other corporations and web researchers over the internet • Program was used company-wide • While creating the software he stated that “all the technology involved in the web had already been developed-‘hypertext’ internet; his contribution was to put them all together in one comprehensive package”2 6

  7. The help Tim Berners-Lee did not develop the World Wide Web by himself, he had the assistance of Robert Cailliau, a Belgian informatics engineer and computer scientist at CERN8

  8. 1990-1991: the crucial years

  9. What came with the www? HTML HTTP URL Uniform Resource Locator Lets you: easily access unique addresses, specific computers, and specific files on that computer Hypertext Markup Language Lets you: publish new websites Hypertext Transfer Protocol Lets you: request for servers to display webpages 9

  10. Now what? “The Web as I envisaged it, we have not seen yet. The future is still so much bigger than the past” – Tim Berners-Lee1

  11. Aftermath of the World wide web 10 Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web Conservatorium at MIT in Boston, MA9 WHY? to preserve and improve the operations of the WWW
