  1. Turn the Other Cheek Matthew 5:38-42

  2. Introduction • the sermon on the mount illustrates what a member of God’s kingdom is to be like • certainly not to retaliate with vengeance • not even enough to meet the requirements of the Law of Moses, gospel is a higher standard • Jesus’ teachings are neither easy or natural, but they are His will and we must follow them • how should we respond to those who take our dignity, our property, and our time?

  3. Defending My Honor • not saying that we must passively take physical assault (Rom. 13:3-4)(Lk. 22:36-38) • instead, how are we to respond to insult? • do we respond in kind, seeking to prove that we are not weak, or are we merciful and humble? (Mt. 5:7)(1 Pet. 5:6)(2 Cor. 12:10) • overcome evil with good (Rom 12:17-21) • even if it opens us up to more insulting treatment (1 Pet. 4:4; 3:8-17)

  4. Keep What’s Rightfully Mine • not that you have to hand everything over to a thief (Rom. 13:3-4)(Eph. 4:28) • instead, how do we act when unfairly deprived of what is our own? • do we fight for fairness and equity, or are we willing to yield for the sake of peace? (James 3:17-4:3)(1 Cor. 6:7-8) • even making an unnecessary sacrifice for the good of the other (Ex. 22:26-27)(1 Jn. 3:16-17)

  5. Reluctant & Inconvenienced • not that we follow immoral instructions or neglect responsibilities (Acts 5:29) • instead, how do we feel when forced to help others with our time, money, etc.? • do we provide help through gritted teeth, or are we joyful and compassionate? (1 Pet. 4:9)(Prov. 31:20) • even providing more than what was required, being an example of God’s grace (Phil. 2:14-16)

  6. Conclusion • as a Christian, we are never going to be the richest or the most popular • these come at the expense of our service to God, our brethren, and our fellow man • even when we feel we have been treated unfairly, we should desire their good, not harm – even to our enemies • the mercy, grace, and love we are called to was first demonstrated by Christ for us
