Why Study Water? • Water is essential for all life forms on Earth and is found in all ecosystems • Water exists naturally in all 3 states of matter on Earth which is rare • Water has some unique and amazing properties • Understanding the characteristics of water lead to a better understanding of future science courses
Review • The following few slides reviews concepts about water that have already been covered, but are still important to know for this unit.

“Universal Solvent” Water can dissolve ionic and polar compounds Video-Water Dissolving NaCl Sodium Chloride
Hydrogen Bonds The forces of attraction between one water molecule and another is called hydrogen bonding. It is a strong force that helps give water some of its important characteristics.
Surface Tension • The hydrogen bonding or forces of attraction between water molecules, they create a strong force at the surface. • That’s how some insects and small animals can ‘walk’ on water. Video-Walking on Water Video-Walking on Water 2
Structure of Ice • As ice, water is unique because it EXPANDS. • Most liquids contract when they become frozen. • This happens due to the way the water molecules fit together which take up more space than when it’s a liquid. • This explains why ice floats on top of water because it is less dense. • The frozen polar ice caps and frozen lakes help to protect marine life living underneath.
