  3. Batch Water Heaters • Also called ICS • Integral Collector/Storage • Batch water heaters are climate limited • Completely passive • Best value in mild climates

  4. All of the following systems are designed using medium temperature collectors with the exception of swimming pool systems

  5. Thermosyphon Systems • Passive no moving parts • Tank and collector separate • Climate limitations • Tank must be higher than collector • Also ICS units

  6. Active Solar Heating • Moving parts • No configuration limitations • Uses parasitic power unless PV powered • Needs control if AC powered

  7. Direct Pump Systems • Used in non freezing climates • Open system • Simple installation

  8. Recirculation – Bad ideas • Will freeze collectors in power outage or • When pump is not pumping or • When control malfunctions or • When it is cold and cloudy for extended periods

  9. Drain Back • Active System • Good freeze protection • Easy to install • Isolated freeze problems • Not easily adapted to PV power

  10. Drain Backs are unforgiving • Sloping collectors and piping • Insuring return tube can get air • Stacking pumps

  11. Drainback collectors should not be mounted in landscape orientation due to riser tubes sagging over the years

  12. Antifreeze Systems • Active system • Most freeze protection • Installation intensive • Adapts to PV Power – low powered pumps • Most maintenance

  13. More complex • Double wall exchanger • Expansion tank • Drain and Fill Valves • Pressure Gauge
