Atmosphere. By: Agustin Peñaherrera. What is it?. It is a layer of gasses that surrounds the Earth. All these gasses are hold down by Earths Gravity. Our atmosphere is what makes life sustainable by retaining gasses as Oxygen and dispersing many UV rays from the sun.

What is it? • It is a layer of gasses that surrounds the Earth. • All these gasses are hold down by Earths Gravity. • Our atmosphere is what makes life sustainable by retaining gasses as Oxygen and dispersing many UV rays from the sun. • It is composed by 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen and 1% Argon.

  3. How it is divided? • It is divided in 5 main layers. • These layers are: exosphere, thermosphere, mesosphere, stratosphere, troposphere (from highest). • As higher the altitude, the thinner the atmosphere becomes and the lower the pressure gets.

  4. Outer Space? • The boundary to outer space has been in question for many years. • The FIA (FédérationAéronautiqueInternationale) says the Karman Line located at a height of 100 kilometres is the boundary to outer space. • The Karman Line is located in the Thermosphere

  5. Troposphere • The first layer from Earth. • It extends form the surface of Earth to 9 km normally and 20 km in the poles. • It contains at least 80% of the mass in the atmosphere. • The bottom of the Troposphere is the warmest, and it goes down with height. • The tropopause is the boundary between the Stratosphere and the Troposphere. • Pressure is at 1 bar.

  6. Stratosphere • It extends at a height of 20 km to 50 km. • Near the Tropopause temperature may drop to -60 Celsius. • The Stratopause is the boundary between the stratosphere and Mesosphere. • Pressure rounds from 100 millibars to 1 millibar.

  7. Mesosphere • It extends at a height of 50 km to 85 km. • Most meteors burn in this layer. • Here the temperature may drop to -100 Celsius, the coldest place in Earth. • Pressure rounds from 1millibar to 0.01 millibars.

  8. Thermosphere • It extends at a height of 85 km to 690 km. • Temperature can rise to 1500 Centigrade. • Particles travel a average of 1 km before crashing. • The Karman Line is located in this layer. • Pressure rounds at 0.001millibars.

  9. Exosphere • It is the outermost layer of the atmosphere. • Mainly composed by helium and hydrogen. • Particles can travel thousands of km before crashing. • It extends at a height of 690 km to 10,000.
