E= El Ranco de las Rosas El Ranco de las Rosas was Esperenza’s home in Aguascalientes, Mexico. This was here home until there was a unexpected fire caused by here evil uncles. Forcing her to leave Mexico.
S= Strike While in California at there new home in the San Fernando Valley, Marta and her friends started a strike to get better pay. The women that worked in the sheds such as Esperenza were protected by the government from the strikers. Most of the strikers were taken from there families and sent back to Mexico even if they were born in America. In this scene Esperenza helped hide Marta from the government.
P= Plums One of Esperenza’s jobs in California was to watch the babies Pepe and Lupe(twins). When Esperenza is left alone for the first time with them she feeds them raw plums. The plums were too harsh on their small stomachs and caused them to have stomach pains. Esperenza then has to think back of what Hortensia (her maid) would do if she had stomach pains. Rice water. That was the solution.
E= Evil Uncles Esperenza has two evil uncles. Tio Luis and Tio Marco. Tio Luis was the towns bank owner and Tio Marco was the mayor. Tio Marco made all of his decisions only because his brother told him to. When something happens to Esperenza’s father Tio Luis proposes to Ramona ( Esperenza’s mother). Ramona refuses and Tio Luis burns down the house.
E=EarthSpeaks In the beginning of the story Esperenza’s father an her are in the grape rows. Her father proclaims “The Earth is alive Esperenza” and tells his daughter to lay on the ground and listen to the Earth’s heartbeat.
N=Never gave up When Esperenza’s mother falls deeply ill Esperenza never gives up on her life. She works harder than ever to take care of the babies, to do her mothers job and to help around the cabin. All while collecting money for her abulita( grandmother ) to come and move from Mexico to California.
Z=Zealous Esperenza is zealous because she is very hardworking. She does her mothers job while she is sick to keep the money coming and works hard to learn new food dishes and finish her grandmother’s blanket. All at the age of 13.
A=America America is Esperenza’s final destination. Her new home. Forced by her uncles fire. Without servants or fancy dresses. Taking care of her mother and abulita.
