OPEN SPACES IN THE CONWAY SLABTOWN AREA MOTION TO APPROVE THE GENERAL PLACEMENT AND SCHEME OF PARKS AND SQUARES AS APPROVED BY THE PLANNING COMMITTEE
2003 policy plan“Create new parks, plazas, and community facilities in areas where significant growth isanticipated, taking advantage of opportunities for new open space development when theyarise.”
OPEN SPACE PRINCIPLES AND QUESTIONS • Locate open space away from I-405 and off-ramp • New squares to offer significant places for public activity, festivals & markets. • Squares are supported by commercial activity around the edges. • Bigger squares are not necessarily better squares • Squares should support commerce, activities, and events such as farmers/public markets, dining, fairs, art shows, etc. • Parks can serve as areas for recreation or relaxation • Is there room for recreational park space in the Con-way area? • Con-way prefers “adult” park (which would not include rec space) • Proposed new parks should flank the green streets • Parks are not suitable for main streets • Special pedestrian and festival streets create identifiable, pedestrian-oriented corridors that provide passage through the neighborhood on full-time or temporary pedestrian-only corridors. • Most plans orient pedestrian corridors North-South • Reinforce main streets with increased density to support services and vitality. • Increasing Con-way frontage on open space increases market value • Open space interior to Con-way property maximizes frontage • Interior open space reduces uncertainty about future development of adjacent properties not owned by Con-way • Attempt to accommodate Con-way’s known development opportunities
