Red vs Black Figure Pottery • When the slip is scraped away from the background and outlines, leaving the figures black, then it is black figure pottery. • This method came first. Theseus and the Minotaur black-figure kylixtondo, 450–440 BCE
Just the opposite, when slip is scraped away from the objects and figures leaving the background black it is called red figure pottery. Fighters with Athena and Hermes Red Figure amphora, 530 BCE. From Vulci • This style came later and was the canon of classical and late Greece.
