Farm to School • Provide Nutritious Foods in Schools Access to locally grown, healthy and nourishing foods • Educate Students, Teachers and Parents Facilitate education about nutrition, food and agriculture in and out of the classroom • Promote Healthy Eating Habits Reduce the risk of obesity and other health related disorders • Help Local Farmers Open up access to new markets and increase revenue for local farmers • Create Healthy Environments Build community support and awareness about local food systems and agriculture

  3. Healthy Eating Habits • Salad bar and other healthy meal options for breakfast and lunch • Nutrition education activities in class • Taste tests and cooking classes • Paring with Harvest of the Month materials

  4. Connecting with Food & Agriculture • Sourcing school food from local farms • Field trips to farms • Farmer in the classroom • School gardens and garden education

  5. Building A Healthy Community • Working to inform and empower parents • Building leadership around food and wellness issues among educators, food service staff, administrators and students • Implementing district-wide food and wellness policies

  6. What are the Barriers? • It’s difficult for districts to buy directly from farmers • Food services are not well integrated with educational programs • Wellness policies are frequently a missed opportunity

Farm to School in Wellness Policies • Nutrition guidelines that promote student health and build healthy eating habits • Implement salad bars that feature fresh seasonal produce • Offer healthy foods for sale at school-sponsored events • Interactive, experiential education activities that strengthen nutrition goals • Establish a school garden and hire a coordinator • Promote locally sourced items in the cafeterias during meal time • Involve many stakeholders in development and implementation of wellness policies • Be inclusive and creative when forming wellness policy committees • Include parents, students, school administrators and board members

Creating Lasting Policy Change • Promote legislative efforts to support Farm to School • AB 909 Pupil Nutrition: Farm to School Program • Get involved in state-wide efforts • Join the California Farm to School Taskforce • Work with state agencies in supporting Farm to School programs • Promote existing programs and support new efforts

  9. Become a Farm to School Advocate • Promote Farm to School in your district • Build connections across district departments • Make sure to inform and involve parents and school staff • Develop wellness policies that support a Farm to School program • Get involved in advocacy at the state level
