  1. METRIC UNITS Math 7

  2. WHAT MEASURES WHAT? • Length- measured in meters • Meters that are common: • Millimeter (mm) – the thickness of a dime • Centimeter (cm) – width of your little finger • Meter (m) – about three feet • Kilometer (km) – about the length of 11 football fields

  3. WHAT MEASURES WHAT? • Capacity (or liquid volume) – measured in liters • Liters that are common: • Milliliter (mL) – a small spoon holds about 5 mL • Liter (L) – a little more than 1 quart (think liter of soda)

  4. WHAT MEASURES WHAT? • Mass (or weight) – measured in grams • Grams that are common: • Milligram (mg) – about the mass of a mosquito • Gram (g) – about the mass of a paper clip • Kilogram (kg) – about the mass of a bunch of bananas

  5. CHOOSE A REASONABLE ESTIMATE The height of a classroom would be ____ A) 3 cm B) 3 m C) 3 km The mass of a bag of flour would be ____ A) 2.3 mg B) 2.3 g C) 2.3 kg The capacity of a bowl of soup would be ____ A) 180 mL B) 180 L C) 180 kL The mass of a butterfly would be ____ A) 500 mg B) 500 g C) 500 kg

  6. CONVERTING WITHOUT THE TABLE • For meters, we have created the following: • km hmdam mdm cm mm • If you take the first letter of each unit, you get: k h d m d cm We can use a saying to help us remember this: King Henry Died Monday Drinking Chocolate Milk

  7. CONVERTING WITHOUT THE TABLE King Henry Died Monday Drinking Chocolate Milk • M for Monday is actually for meters. You should also use this spot for liters and grams. • Now, all you have to do to get from one unit to the other is move the decimal point as many places as you are away and in the correct direction

  8. CONVERTING WITHOUT THE TABLE King Henry Died Monday Drinking Chocolate Milk Convert: 58 m = ____ mm 8,490 mm = ____ km 245 mL = ____ L 2,034 mg = ____ dag 1.4 g = ____ mg 3.456 cm = ____ hm 4,690 g = ____ kg

  9. WORD PROBLEMS Antarctica averages 2,400 meters in elevation. What is the average elevation of Antarctica in kilometers? The world’s tallest man was 272 cm tall. Find his height in meters. The capacity of a plastic cup is 350 mL. How many of those cups can you fill from a 2.1 L bottle of juice?

  10. MORE WORD PROBLEMS You need 1.3 g of calcium per day. You get 290 mg of calcium per glass of milk. If you drink 4 glasses of milk, how much more calcium do you need? A bag of birdseed mix contains 400 g of sunflower seed, 300 g of thistle seed, and 0.5 kg of mixed seeds. What is the weight, in grams, of 6 bags of birdseed mix?
