  2. Franklin: free man • The word franklin originally derived from the old English word “frig” meaning free born

  3. The original middle class • The franklin was neither a vassal nor a lord but rather a free tenant of the crown • They held land without having the obligation of military service or rent • They were the beginning of the real property owning middle class of Europe in the middle ages

  4. The wealth of the Franklin • Franklins obtained their money from their talents or from their parents • As a new emerging middle class the franklin helped bridge the gap between the nobility and the peasants and helped bring about the end to the middle ages

  5. Franklins were given more rights then the peasantry class • Their rights were taken from the Magna Carta "No free man shall be seized or imprisoned, or stripped of his rights or possessions, or outlawed or exiled. Nor will we proceed with force against him. Except by the lawful judgment of his equals or by the law of the land. To no one will we sell, to no one deny or delay right or justice."

  6. Franklins along with members of the noble class would go to rings to bet on animal fights involving bulls, roosters, asses, and badgers

  7. Entertainment • The franklins form of entertainment was more like the noble class than that of the lower class • They often went horseback riding and racing as a way to pass the time

  8. All members of medieval society relied on one source for entertainment and that was in the form of peoples public humiliations and executions • Franklins also used traveling as a way to break away from the monotony of their everyday lives

  9. Feasts • Feasts were held as celebrations or for political purposes • Often hired musicians, dancers, or poets would perform as forms of entertainment during feasts • Feasts were usually a multi course meal with the main course being some form of meat dish

  10. Canterbury Tales: The Franklin • Although franklins were not of noble birth they often strove to live on the finer side of life much like the franklin in the Canterbury Tales • An anlace and a gipser all of silk (dagger & purse)Hung at his girdle white as morning milk.A sherriff had he been, and a counter. (tax overseer)Was nowhere such a worthy vavasoúr.

  11. The Range of the Franklin • Although free men franklins varied in their lifestyles • Some franklins lived much more humbly as farmers not much more than the peasants of the time • Others lived lives comparable or even better than that of the noble class
