  1. New Technology -- New Demands

  2. Trends to Watch • Better search engines/indexing tools – call #s? • Integration of all types of resources & media – open access • New standards • Better understanding of end user behavior—interfaces/discovery/social networking • Anytime/Anyplace access – we’re going mobile/apps • Shifting staff and workflow patterns & tools – open source/open API/Software as service (SAS) • New tools – touch, RFID, fabbing

  3. Staying Current • Takes TIME, EFFORT, COMMITMENT • Regain (or continue) your sense of wonder—learning all the time (from the newspaper to the grocery store, to the concert, to the stadium) • Look outside your field to see what other companies are doing: Microsoft, Amazon

  4. Staying Current (2) • Don’t expect to learn everything – be choosy about you invest your brain power in • Not worth my time • Might be of interest—I’ll keep an eye on • Need to know right now

  5. Staying Current (3) • Choose a handful of information resources—not all of them -- TED • Use professional filters, blogs (tametheweb) • Libraries are Essential (website and FB) • Library as Incubator (website and FB) • Talk to colleagues—professional organizations • Be responsible—its up to you not your organization—explore, participate, lead

  6. Staying Current • Accept that change is constant and constant learning is the only way you meet this CHALLENGE • Be the agent of change, not its victim • The result is my favorite ‘Barbism’ (borrowed) The most important asset of any library Goes home at night--- THE LIBRARY STAFF (YOU)!
