  1. Bell Ringer • Check your file! • If your test grade is below a 77, you have until next Thursday to come in for tutoring and arrange a retake of the test. • Any student whose final grade falls below a 77 will have a parent contact. Be ready!

  2. Unit 2: MatterChapter 3: States of MatterSection 1: Matter and Energy

  3. Kinetic Theory • Kinetic Theory of Matter - Matter is made of atoms and molecules that are always in motion • Higher temperatures = faster motion of the particles • Larger particles move slower than smaller ones

  4. States of Matter • Solids – have definite shape and volume • Ex) ice cube • Liquids – change shape, not volume • Ex) kool-aid • Gases – change both shape and volume • Ex) CO2

  5. States of Matter • Fluids – nonsolid state of matter in which the atoms or molecules are free to move past each other, as in a gas or liquid • Gases and liquids • Plasma – state of matter that consists of free-moving ions and electrons

  6. Energy • Energy – the capacity to do work • Ability to change or move matter • All particles of matter have kinetic energy (because they are always in motion!!!)

  7. Energy • Temperature – measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object • Basically, measures how fast particles are moving • Thermal Energy – the total kinetic energy of a substance’s atoms

  8. Exit Slip • What kind of energy do all particles of matter have?
